In the late 1820s, the Norwegian artist Knud Baade began to make studies of clouds in an attempt to capture their transient energy. This cloud study picture from 1838 (possibly Dresden) is anchored by the inclusion of a city skyline.

In the 1970s, Bernard Buffet made a series of paintings which included harbours and ports throughout France. This picture is of St Malo in Brittany, painted in his characteristic gothic, expressionist style; a manner which apparently reflected his personality.
