I tried using AI transcription to dictate hill logs.

It is not entirely successful.

The organisation I work for has a schedule for assigning people certain tasks.
At some point this started being called the ROTA. It is now always capitalised. Previously it had been the rota.
Somehow nobody has ever, to my knowledge, challenged this apparent invention of an acronym. I don't […]

One of my favourite bits of weird infrastructure is this bridge in a #glasgow railway station. It has no roof, but the walls are normal glazing units.
But they've stumped-up for the double-glazed option.

I had a vivid dream last night that I was involved with the launch of a new whisky which was mixed with psilocybin.
I'm now worried that the reason I wake up tired every day is that I have Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde situation wheer my sleeping self is running a podcast for men.

Only while trying to work over an ssh connection do you discover how many tunnels are on the railway between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Very excited that the first day of summer 2024 in Glasgow is also the last day of meteorological summer.
Well timed, Glasgow, well timed.

For the second time this year I'm at a conference in a place with mountains and I may now boycott any future meetings which don't meet this requirement.

I know it's not been the best summer, but getting this in stock in August is a vote of extreme pessimism from my local supermarket.

Maps this morning, marathons this afternoon.

In a much-anticipated follow-up to 2023's "how good am I at half-marathons" I run the data on the main event.

I wanted nicer looking maps for blog posts about hills.

In a good example of one of my "fun little projects" getting totally out of hand, I now have a full basemap of Scotland on my website which shows all the hills in my own hand-crafted style […]

There are some things we may never understand, like what's at the bottom of the deepest ocean? what came before the Big Bang? why did I wake up with a burning desire to learn Haskell at 5:30 this morning?

"I won't spend £40 to have a £5 component replaced in my bike" says I, the day before spending £120 on tools to replace the £5 component.

I don't mean to suggest that the sub-editors at a certain newspaper are struggling to write good headlines, but the information content of the second half of this one is impressively minimalist.

It has been, somewhat unbelievably, just over seven years since we detected #gw170817, which was notable for just how many firsts it represented in astronomy:
+ First observed merger of two neutron stars
+ First observation of #gravitationalwaves and light […]

Also me: "I'm going to rewrite this all in rust really quickly"

I feel like it's now a regular thing that I finish a race and start wondering if there's something fundamentally odd about my heart.

Today, from a 5 mile race (GFR OutRun 🏳️‍🌈), and my heart rate spends most of the time well above where conventional […]

I'm happy to announce that I've started work on what will eventually become v2 of minke, a python library for working with gravitational waveforms.

The first alpha is now available, with support for a random selection of CBC and burst waveforms.

This is a long time coming, with this project […]
