Same in Australia. I can't access bluesky DMs without scanning my face or supplying a credit card or ID. It's the same for every other social media site. I don't think bluesky was even included in the government under 16s ban, but I can't keep up with this rubbish that doesn't protect kids.

I despise most true crime - crime is not entertainment. It too often dehumanises victims or reduces them to one-dimensional stories, which fuels that sort of thinking.

The gov isn't going to fund a massive social media platform for free. Those enormous costs would be better spent elsewhere.
People use social media to connect with others overseas - do you want the gov to fund that? Expect people around the world to flock to an Aus gov funded platform?

I don't have account, no. But from what I can tell, ABC iView doesn't collect much more than your email and what you watch on there so your comparison is unclear.

Having a preference for a platform that's not established and funded the government doesn't mean I'm unaware of the issues, or that I'm a fan. Realistically, there will never be a social media platform free from data use issues.

Yes, I would still rather a US owned company hold data like my personal messages, than a government funded body. Plus, at least their platforms run reliably.

I'd choose the unethical capitalists over the government who have powers they don't, like your access to services, welfare, benefits, immigration etc. You want them to have real time access to data like your personal conversations, opinions, and social interactions? Yikes.

If not for the internet, I would have suffered so much when I had severe CFS. I could still socialise and stay connected while bedridden or housebound, so I wasn't isolated.
