One of my favorite moments last year was a visit to DC, and I basically talked my partner's ear off about Grants poor hardscrabble background, his prosecution of the KKK, his willingness to sacrifice for what he thought was morally right, and even his fatal flaw loyal gullibility.

Every so often, as we fight in the trenches of this dumb culture war while also actually trying to save off fascism, I'm reminded of a letter I found in the municipal archives from 1942.
