They want an entire Sister Soulja campaign and it just won’t be gripping or relevant to anyone but the Substack centrists.

Yeah I thought he was going to try some bullying theater like he do with Zelenskyy—didn’t see this vibe coming at all.

It’s a political opportunity for Dems but at the end of the day if they win they’ll have the same problem!

Gotta say Bezos got exactly what he wanted from WaPo editorial.

In terms of elections, middle-range voters are no more passionate about anti-wokeness than they were excited about cultural progressivism. The tendency of pundits to ignore clear evidence that Trump won on the economy and insist it was an anti-woke referendum doesn’t help our analysis.

That was basically Bill Maher’s take as well—Democrats need to reject the idea that there’s anything wrong with groping women, and signal that more Cuomos are welcome back in the tent.

Cue the J.D. Vance defense that "this kid" is just blowing off some steam because of all the DEI

This is good—though now I suspect that statements like these will be used as further pretexts for deploying federal troops (“clearly local law enforcement does not recognize the severity of the threat an so cannot be trusted to protect the people …”

For immigrants with legal status the danger of losing that status due to posted opinions is very real. The administration has made it clear that they are indeed 'scouring' social media feeds looking for any reason to either deny visas or revoke status and deport.

He’s gonna bring them all the way out here just to tell them to stop woke and be warfighters isn’t he

Whats interesting to me is the assumption that Shaping the Discourse and influencing institutions is the only legitimate purpose of social media.

Like sometimes people just want to say stuff—to vent, learn something, see how people are reacting to events.

In all of these conversations "serious" generally just means "more willing to hurt other people in the pursuit of our own interest" - it doesn't involve any other level of acumen or strategic thinking.

This is one of the most perniciously stupid and callous policies I can think of, and the bar is high.

Another clear indicator that Stephen Miller runs immigration policy as independently of Trump as he can get away with (there will probably be a reversal on this in a few days after Miller gets the chance to talk him down).

I think we don’t really address how much an appearance or vibe of slowness is the decisive factor in how we treat this issue—it’s not really about age, or health, it’s how Biden speaks in a slower affect (that codes as “feeble”) and Trump doesn’t.

Hell Montreal is south of Seattle 😳

Fair enough. I feel like cable news got the ball rolling but you’re right, it was social media that really brought us to where we are now.
August 18, 2025 at 1:49 PM
I don’t think social media is solely responsible for this effect—the fragmented media ecosystem writ large is the bigger picture—but it remains the case that large scale protest doesn’t really move the needle the way it could decades ago.

Yeah, my from-the-hip take is that gains from social media in making organizing easier were countered by diluting the efficacy of organizing in affecting public opinion. The impact of seeing 100,000 marchers on TV is diluted when your favorite reactionary YouTube can get 100,000 likes the next day.

You know, I was expecting this assault against state schools. But I honestly did not know until recently just how thoroughly major private universities are on dependent federal dollars in order to function, to the point where they will just roll over.
