I’ve written a bunch of holiday specials, but there’s no My Weird School Thanksgiving special. The closest is “Dr. Carbles Is Losing His Marbles!” Mr. Klutz offers to marry a turkey if each class makes a Thanksgiving display. It’s weird! You can get it here: www.harpercollins.com/products/my-...

Will the REAL Dan Gutman please stand up? (At the Fieldston School in the Bronx, NY last week)

AUDIOBOOK FANS: I grew up 4 miles from Thomas Edison’s lab in West Orange NJ, & he was always a hero of mine. Now the audiobook of my 2001 novel about Edison is 70% off--just $3.30! (The audiobook is 3.5 hours long, get it?). Sale ends December 12. Get it here:

It’s one thing for an artist to create a book cover. Creating the cover art for a box set is even MORE impressive. This is why Jim Paillot is the unsung genius behind My Weird School. This box set will be available next Fall.

Kids love to come up with My Weird School titles based on the name of their real teacher. These are from the 3rd graders at Grandview School in North Caldwell, New Jersey. My favorite is “Miss Romero Eats a Meatball Hero!” Teachers--Try this with your class!

I went to see a play on Broadway last night, but I left at intermission because the Playbill said, “Act 2, one year later.”

ARE YOU LISTENING? Audiobook fans get 50% off this biography during November. Yeah, I know kids have no idea who Lucille Ball was. But you can teach them! Show them the reruns! They’re hilarious!

I hardly ever do in-person school visits anymore (because I hate the travel part). But Fieldston School in Bronx NY is 15 minutes from home so I spent the day there yesterday. Great kids! Great teachers! I love visiting schools by zoom, but nothing beats the give & take of meeting readers in person.

READERS OF THE WEEK are Ryan and Jeason, who were born in The Netherlands but now live in Thailand. Their dad emailed me to say that reading My Weird School is helping the boys learn English. They’re reading the books for the third time now.

I love it when my books get translated into other languages, so kids in different parts of the world can read them. On the left is Tien-Wei’s cover for “Return of The Homework Machine,” which will be published in complex Chinese this month.

48 years ago, I graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in psychology. And finally, at long last, on Monday night I received the honor I so richly deserve—I was invited to judge the first annual Mac ‘n Cheese Bake-Off put on by the Rutgers Cheese Club.

On Election Day, I think this is perfect for my EMAIL OF THE WEEK…

Do U have shelves of books your kids outgrew? Book Fairies gives books to kids in low income areas of New York. They’ve given away more than five million books. The executive director is Eileen Minogue, seen here. Donating to Book Fairies will clear your shelves & help create lifelong readers.

I suspect that my wife is putting glue on my collection of antique weapons. She says it’s not true, but I’m sticking to my guns.

Tito Peter was a Jersey guy, but his wife is from the Philippines. So he built Tito Peter's Free Library there so the kids would have books, computers, wifi, & tutoring. These are the kinds of heroes we need to celebrate. Go to www.librarycat.org/lib/titopeter or www.facebook.com/Tito.Peters....

Fun size?? I think it would be more fun if they put more M&Ms in.

Addison came to see me recently at Books And Greetings in Northvale, New Jersey with her mom. Do you have a local bookstore? Do they have author signings? Bring your kids. It’s free. You don’t even have to buy a book. (But it’s even nicer if you do!)

Scout and her family are big My Weird School fans who live in England. Hmmm, I wonder if kittens over there meow with a British accent.

That’s it. It’s 2:30am. 17 innings is enough for me. They’ll just have to finish Game 3 on their own. I’m going to sleep.

I’m just gonna come out and say it. I HATE PUMPKINS. I don’t like pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, or any other so-called “food” made with pumpkins. Why? Because I love watermelon, and as soon as those orange monstrosities come out, watermelon season is over. I can’t find them in stores anymore…
October 27, 2025 at 4:05 PM
…What I want to know is, what percentage of pumpkins are just decoration? People buy watermelons to EAT, not to stick on a porch. I bet 90% of these porch pumpkins will just rot and end up in a landfill (where they belong). I want my watermelons back!

There, that felt good.

Did you hear about the OTHER guy who tried to rob the Louvre? It turned out his van ran out of gas on the way to the museum. He said "I had no Monet to buy Degas and make the Van Gogh, so I decided to steal the paintings because I had nothing Toulouse."

READER OF THE WEEK is Hunter, from Missouri. I never thought my characters looked like pumpkins, but every year before Halloween people send me photos of their pumpkins dressed up like A.J. from My Weird School. It must be the hair, I guess.
