And that’s the other issue, if life were to mean life, we’d need to build very expensive geriatric jails, to incarcerate elderly prisoners who pose little or no risk.

That is undoubtedly the issue but, if life were to mean life, in all cases, we would have to build hundreds of new prisons and, lifers have the lowest reoffending rate of any prisoners due to the self reflection they are forced to undergo.

A life sentence does mean life; once you’ve served your minimum term AND proved to the parole panel you no longer pose the risk you once did, you will be managed in the community for the rest of your life and subject to recall at any time.
