What the near future look like for the US grid? The "planned" tab of the EIA's 860m file shows solar, batteries and gas are on track to be the main players.

I wrote about US new power plant additions in the first half of the year, and what's on tap between now and 2030. If I had to some this up in three words, they'd be: solar, batteries, Texas.

Do you live near one of those dots? We mapped the nearly 70 power plants that just got a two-year exemption from an update to mercury pollution rules.

The good news: I got five boxes of 40-count Barry’s Tea for 99 cents each. The bad news: it’s so cheap because my local store will no longer carry it and wants to clear out inventory. I imagine this was afoot before tariffs.

The hard right turn in federal energy policy provides a good reason to take a look at where the states really are in terms of electricity mix. One lesson here is that states have a lot of leeway to do what they want.

The alternative headline to this week's column could easily have been, "Wow, Texas." I dove into the latest EIA data about electricity generation in '24.

As my household continues an Inspector Morse rewatch, I wonder: Is Robbie Lewis, as played by Kevin Whately (left) the best sidekick to ever appear in a UK procedural? He is essential to the appeal of the show, and a great foil for the lead.

We've started an Inspector Morse rewatch at my house, and it reminds me that Peter Woodthorpe was a global treasure. Before his character, Max, was there such a thing as a comic relief pathologist?

2/ The Gavin plan on the Ohio River is a giant, and a blight on its community. I wrote in Oct. how the pending new owner was eying a 2031 shutdown or switch to different fuel.

Vera Stanhope has taken her last bow, concluding a run of sometimes great, often very good and only occasionally bad television. I'm going to miss this show. If you haven't seen it, the whole thing is on BritBox.

#NowPlaying This was where I first heard Eric Dolphy, and it's a pretty good entry point for his work. The first track, with its spoken chatter at the beginning and then an absolutely epic 19 minutes, is an experience.

As this one plays, my 10-year-old offers a review of Eric Dolphy's distinctive style: "His honking sounds like a rabid emu."

This state chart is fascinating, but the all caps caveat -- BEWARE OF SMALL SAMPLE SIZES. So, the Idaho figures, for example, may not mean much because there aren't many rooftop systems there.

Rooftop solar is becoming more accessible to people with low and middle incomes. I wrote about the latest edition of a long-term study by Lawrence Berkeley Lab:

Maybe it's the awful way the Twins season ended, but I'm finding that I'm less tempted to channel my yearning for baseball into buying Twins stuff. About the only things I find tempting are purely nostalgia-related, like anything for Joe Mauer.
