I finally finished the 750 page biography of Sonny Rollins. I think it says something about the subject when their biography is that long. His life was like a god jazz piece. Twisting and turning, the highs and lows, hitting the planned parts and improvising fearlessly between them.

Oh yeah, that’s a good one. I mean, it’s funny on so many levels. The jokes, they tell themselves.

I never considered myself a squeamish reader until I read this story of Joseph Lister and his crusade to introduce hygienic practices in the mid-1800’s. Don’t get me wrong. Fascinating story and Lindsey Fitzharris is an expert storyteller but yeeesh.

This book had me gazing out the window for most the morning. It was so human and compassionate, with humor deeply woven into the fabric of the narrative. Just amazing.

Five stars all the way. Hard Rain Falling follows Jack, an ex con trying to find the straight path in the fifties. The route is never clear and the distractions are endless. Dostoyevskyian, bleak, raw, and absolutely beautiful. This is going stay with me for a long while.

This book is great but it’s dark. Out holds you close, not like a beloved blanket, but like a bottle of cheap liquor for which you have a taste aversion. Recommended.
