Interesting paper asking whether the EU is an environmental leader in trade. Conclusion: to some extent because it's the biggest importer and exporter of environmental goods, but it's got a lot of work to do in some areas. I didn't realise the UK ranked so highly

A thought-provoking piece. One of the shortcomings of AI that's less talked about is that its main perception of intelligence is goal orientated and utilitarian - an 'intelligence' that concerns end-states not process: much like those who promote it.

Tsk tsk, @economist.com. This piece is pockmarked with clichés: "On the rocks," "sweet-talk," "balancing act," "hammered out," "halcyon days," "fall by the wayside".

I thought clear language was supposed to be your strength.

4. Here's the table of applied tariffs in each of these countries, for comparison. All the rates applied by the countries in the table are much lower than the rate the US applies on them. There's nothing 'reciprocal' here.

As I said in my last Substack post, WTF are Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia & Bangladesh doing at the top of this list, let alone Thailand, Indonesia or Sri Lanka?
No country should face these big tariffs. Targeting the smallest & poorest is pyscho stuff.

I see the dreadful right-wing bigot Norman Tebbit is dead.

This has particular poignancy for me, because he was my first cousin, twice removed. My grandma Elaine Stagg was his mum's Edith Stagg's first cousin...

You could almost hear the elastic snap as centrists got their knickers in a twist. Mamdani thrashed Cuomo on a platform of affordability, housing and redistribution. But Mamdani is no radical utopian. All of his policies work elsewhere.

NYC Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani isn't proposing much that is new. Most of his policies are eminently sensible.

Laughably dreadful comment in the FT today. How to facilitate the far right. Serious or parody? "error of judgement," "raised his hand in an awkward angle" (sic), "works hard," "give him a chance". Being an authoritarian ultra-rightist and destroying democracy is OK as long as you make tons of money

Using them will be just as annoying and untrustworthy as most other encounters with machine learning.
