If your arithmetic classes had a machine that cost less than a dollar a day, was easy to operate, fun to use, helped you teach, like a computer, helped them learn, like a tutor, you'd have a Tutor Computer. Here's how it helps. The first machine of its kind, the Tutor Computer is an inexpensive, self-programmed desktop computer for use at all levels of elementary and remedial arithmetic practice. It's like having a para-professional in your classroom. Completely under teacher control, the Tutor Computer can be activated directly from the keyboard to give your students unlimited practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Problems and answers are printed clearly on paper tape. ADD PRACTICE A student can work at his own pace, receive immediate response to his answers, and at any time see the correct solutions. SUBTRACT PRACTICE A single keystroke will provide the teacher with a record of the total number of problems presented, the number and percentage of correct answers. Problem areas can be quickly MULTIPLY PRACTICE spotted, new sets of problems immediately structured to fit individual needs. DIVIDE PRACTICE The Tutor Computer is extremely versatile. It handles both positive and negative numbers (prints negative numbers in red). It can present two random numbers or one random number and one constant. It can be used as a regular calculator, and it's available as a math-algebraic machine or as a list-mode adding machine. Here's how it works. Let's say that one of your students needs practice in the multiplication of fractions. With a few simple keystrokes you determine the range and level of difficulty of the problems the machine will present. The student sees the first problem printed out on the paper read-out tape. He solves the problem — mentally or with pencil and paper - then enters his solution and presses the "MY ANSWER" key. Correct answers are immediately rewarded with a double row of dots. For incorrect answers, the machine re-presents the problem to allow the student another try. If he is again unable to find the solution he can derive MY ANSWER correct answers by using the calculator mode of the machine or, failing this, he can press a separate "CORRECT ANSWER" key to see the correct result. In every instance he must enter the correct answer himself, then press the "MY ANSWER" key, rein- 2 forcing correct response before the machine moves on to present the next problem. In the case of fractions, the machine will accept an unreduced fraction as a correct response. It will then reduce the fraction to its lowest form for CLEAR ENTRY the student before moving to 小 the next set of fractions. The tape itself provides a permanent record of student progress that can be monitored or analyzed at any time. For a teacher, this becomes a diagnostic device that facilitates "stepping stone" instruction as competency at each level is demonstrated. For a student, arithmetic becomes fun. The Tutor Computer gives him individual attention, never expresses disapproval. He doesn't have to wait, or disturb the rest of the class for an answer, and the machine rewards him when his entry is correct. He experiences the novelty of attempting something new, his correct responses are reinforced, both problems and answers are for him and him alone.
