If you're in London between now and November 9th, there is a gorgeous *free* (and under advertised) Frankenstein exhibition at Selfridges. Costumes, designs, models, and first editions of the novel. (Thanks to mirror-lurking @johnnymains.co.uk for taking me there!) www.selfridges.com/GB/en/stores...

Last night at the Proms I heard the Vienna Philharmonic play Bruckner 9. (Hearing the scherzo on Radio 3 first got me into him.) It was the 20th anniversary of my father's death. He tended to view Bruckner as a second best to Mahler, but I think he'd have enjoyed this performance as much as I did.

I'm reading Bleak House and I just got to this line, said by one of the most sympathetic characters in the novel. It doesn't change how I feel about the book, but I suppose what I found remarkable (compared to say the depiction of Fagin) is how casual and *un*remarkable a line like this is.

Delighted to finally meet @annebillson.bsky.social in person (after many little film chats on here and the previous place.) And I was so glad to be able to tell her how much her horror film reviews in Time Out meant to me at the time!

The reasons for the train delays have achieved a sort of nihilistic poetry.

I had a very similar response. (Also the test is quite US-centric. Felt like a *lot* of mac & cheese options.)

I finished Spent by Alison Bechdel. As with her other books, the joy is less in the (auto-fictional) story than in the characters. And the real treat is the reappearance of old friends from Dykes To Watch Out For. There's such a balance of humour and humanity in the writing and artwork. I loved it.

RIP Pik-Sen Lim - she played Wei's Grandma Zhen in an episode of Lagging and gave an absolutely terrific comedy performance. We were very lucky to have her in the show.

What actor's expression in a movie will stay with you for the rest of your life?

When I first saw someone as socially well-adjusted as Eric Binford go to the cinema alone it gave me the courage to do so, too.

In anticipation of the upcoming film, I read The Long Walk, one of Stephen King's "Bachman Books". Whichever name he's writing under, he has such a gift for developing a simple (horrifying) idea through relatable characters you care about. And then there are breathtakingly prescient lines like this:

I honestly thought for a second this was an ad for a box of Ikea tissues.

This is me pretending to be an inquisitive child looking in an unattended pot on the stove, for an article in a German newspaper. (Sadly I don't have the cutting, only the original photo.)
