It also reminds me of what MLK, Jr. said regarding the white moderate in Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

I read your Substack piece and watched this. I agree with you. The thing is, Coates is one of the best thinkers we have out there right now. I have deeply appreciated his books and articles. Thanks for sharing!

We were so thrown off! I said to my husband, “Wait, what, exactly, are they making?” We had to do research! 🧐

For sure! The internalized misogyny is real!

For sure! And the PhD was "Dr." before the MD! It's frustrating because what actually happens is that women who have a doctorate are not called Dr., while men who have a doctorate (or even men who don't!) are called Dr.

I was surprised that a woman author would post this meme with the caption, "Generally speaking, I have found this to be accurate." Several people agreed with her in the comments. Only one person said maybe we shouldn't knock the work it takes to earn any doctorate. No one pointed out the sexism.

Also, the meme-maker clearly needed the help of some educators if they are still finding it difficult to spell "appled" and don't understand that "biomedical" is one word. That's a petty complaint, I realize, but if you're going to make an argument that education is somehow worthless...

There is also a notion that a doctorate in education is not worth as much as doctorates in other fields. This meme implies that a doctorate in education or social sciences has the same value as an honorary doctorate. This is incredibly offensive to me.

People who don't care are often men. Let's name it. Men are often accorded a higher level of respect in academia. Honorifics are a way to demonstrate respect. If you don't have to worry about whether your students and colleagues respect you as much, maybe you don't care if you're called Dr.
