Work in HE ed tech, love ice hockey, dogs, playing drums, and drinking good bourbon. I have a Simpsons quote in the chamber for every possible scenario.
I bet in the video from this shot she's blinking in morse code

What's next, people yelling into their speaker phones--which are also at maximum volume--in public?
December 12, 2025 at 4:34 PM
If I published a training video for my job that was me holding a small wireless mic and talking into my phone in a mirror, I would get so fucking fired.

It wasn't a mistake. It was a test to see whether or not they could get away with it. It's still ongoing. They're going to see if someone actually forces them to let this guy go.

He really is a one-trick pony, and after 10 years, his base STILL eats it up.

I hope to God my life is never that devoid of enjoyment that I would fall to that level.

Not only are these things NOT ironic, they're out and out lies. Stop trying to dress up what these goons did as anything other than an attempt to see what they could get away with.

(Also, don't use words if you don't know what they actually mean.)

Sadly, I was about to type "imagine believing you could go through life without knowing how to write" but then I remembered that this coming-up generation is being conditioned to believe that shitty LLMs will do all the thinkin' and writin' for them.

Turns out my vocation was something completely different than I thought it would be when I was fucking 18 years old. Having other skills--writing, communication, problem solving, computer skills--that had nothing to do with math set me up for the next 25 years of my career.
December 9, 2025 at 9:56 PM
I started my undergrad believing I would be a math major, go to grad school, and be a math professor. Along the way I discovered that I would hate doing that, that I enjoyed writing, and that living with two CS majors taught me a lot about computers. (1/2)

Can you "step down" from a job you never legally had?
December 9, 2025 at 3:00 PM
"TL;DR you should probably go for 2 as long as your 2 point conversion rate is, conservatively, 40% or better."

The Browns are... not there. It also ignores all game flow. I get that there are some times you want to avoid OT at all costs, but this wasn't it for the Browns.

This isn't *just* a Stefanski thing, but someone needs to explain how "analytics" now say that when you're down 14 and score you go for 2. A TON of teams do this now and I simply don't get it. A play with <50% chance of success, and when you miss it you FORCE yourself to have to do it again!

Yep, seems the final box in the flow chart of motivations is always "will this make money from the rubes?"
December 8, 2025 at 3:00 PM
It's one of the things that has always baffled me about the religious "pro life" (making fake finger quotes) movement that simultaneously views all unborn babies as precious lives to be cherished while also believing that pregnancy is a "consequence".

Senator, it's the face-eating leopards on line 2...
December 5, 2025 at 8:26 PM
Every pitcher throws 100 now, and every hitter is worried about "launch angle" and "exit velocity" rather than making line-drive contact.

How many more strikeouts and flyouts are there now compared to that time period?
December 4, 2025 at 5:07 PM
It's shocking--shocking, I tell you--to me how someone with "@ nvidia" in their BlueSky bio isn't arguing in good faith about what a LLM is or what it's capable of doing
December 4, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Actual, serious question: in the highlighted line, what does "inferred" mean next to the statistics? That they're not real statistics?

I'm genuinely confused by that. Is that normal in this field?
