From what I've heard from Portuguese friends, it's that the Spanish don't bother speaking/learning the most basic Portuguese.

In our experience, Americans are quite well liked because the types of Americans settling here are usually very nice. There is a bit of disdain for the French and the Spanish because they frequently don’t treat the Portuguese with respect.
(Btw, we call ourselves immigrants rather than ex-pats)
