Also, to my dearest cohort at SNS, my family, my spouse, and an endless list of people who were by my side all these years.

I would not have been able to do this without your feedback, support, and patience!

I am thrilled to be finally done!

Last week, I successfully defended my PhD thesis on "Dynamics of Far-Right Transnationalization" @sns.it.

Many thanks to my supervisors, Manuela Caiani and Hans-Jörg Trenz, and the members of the examination committee, Annett Heft, @aurelmondon.bsky.social, Andrea Salvini, and Marco Deseriis!

Joining us from Brazil, Liriam Sponholz delivered the closing remarks for the RaMi symposium online: "it's not only about the normalization of the far-right but also the mainstreaming of the radical, and the radicalization of the mainstream".

The final presentation of the RaMi symposium is delivered by @dom-of-tronina.bsky.social! In their joint paper with
@luke-shuttleworth.bsky.social, using discourse coalitions, they analyze reactionary feminism and the mainstreaming of the far right in the German-language magazine Emma.

Next up, @luke-shuttleworth.bsky.social presents a part of his dissertation research, where he questions how mainstream parties in the UK accommodate anti-migration discourses in parliamentary debates.

In the second presentation, Fabian Hess and Wanda Drabon, focusing on the climate movement, conducted three experiments hypothesizing that the saliency of the threat is fuel for the (further) radicalization of climate activism.
November 10, 2023 at 3:50 PM
We start with Nicole Doerr's presentation about the (AI) images used by Europe and USA-based far-right actors for gendered mobilising against climate activists and liberal democrats.
November 10, 2023 at 3:33 PM
Last but not least, Deniz T. Kılınçoğlu shared with us his insights on the ethno-religious nationalist worldview in Turkey, taught and normalized through primary school books.
November 10, 2023 at 2:19 PM
Building on her personal history and intensive fieldwork, Surya Ghildiyal presented her research on how ordinary people were subjected to violence (i.e. ordinary violence), mainly driven by religious divides, by the right in India.
November 10, 2023 at 2:18 PM
In her presentation, Karoline Maria Fernandes da
Costa e Silva speaks about the new face of the far-right in Brazil, beyond Bolsonaro, while stressing that a new and normalized disinformation ecosystem has been in the works.

Our second wonderful keynote speech is delivered by Andreas Zick, as he takes a deep dive into the concept of the "middle" in society and its role in the normalization of extremist views and democracy.
November 10, 2023 at 10:41 AM
We start with an amazing keynote speech by the one and only Ruth Wodak, on the processes of discursive normalization of the far-right and what these lead to in practice. Using the Austrian case study, she also presented an argumentation analysis of the fallacy of common sense.

Good morning! It's already the final day of the #RaMi symposium at DeZIM Institut today.
November 10, 2023 at 10:38 AM
The second panel starts now! Unfortunately, I won't be able to tweet this time, as I am presenting with Sabrina Zajak. We will summarise the results of the NaDiRa project, on depictions of racism in the mainstream media, and the RaMi project on the online strategies of the far-right in Germany.
November 9, 2023 at 4:34 PM
And we have one more presentation before the coffee break. Viktoria Kamuf talks about the relationship between the margins and the mainstream, among others, through her analysis of the Hanau attack in 2020.
November 9, 2023 at 3:15 PM
Now, Sophie Lange analyses the 1989 Peaceful Revolution as a "paradox of democracy", which holds true also in comparison to German politics today.
November 9, 2023 at 2:53 PM
Now, we listen to Kristian Berg Harpviken explain further aspects of far-right mobilizations, from a more policy and political change perspective, but yet again with a focus on views on immigration.
November 9, 2023 at 12:02 PM
After a presentation of the #RaMi project (see: tinyurl.com/f38cnd8c ) by Sabrina Zajak and Anna-Maria Meuth, we are now listening to Michal Krzyzanowski, brilliantly explaining the (discursive) processes of normalization of the far-right. Unfortunately, my phone takes very poor photos in low light.
