Surprised no one has mentioned including ChatGPT as an essential resource. Used well it can become an invaluable thought partner.

You’re way too deferential to the NYT falling for an influence campaign. A white male with questionable creds versus a black female. The NYT piling on against the black female is just par for our current culture - which the NYT just goes along with.

You and I will have to agree to disagree.

Having worked on state assessment systems for the last 2 decades, the validity evidence is rock solid.

I get it! People hate accountability results so they throw the assessment under the bus.

IMHO the solution is to make better use of the data.

Nice! In most state the evidence from summative assessments about kids being behind is unequivocal.

That clearly isn’t the message being given to parents based upon teacher observations. Both can’t be right. And I don’t think this speaks well to the validity of teacher classroom observations).

And to be really specific, there were HUGE impacts with middle school math. Lots of kids once considering STEM careers are likely not any longer. And recovery has favored males over females at this grade level in math.

I agree that we don’t want to unnecessarily alarm parents. But tens of thousands of kids are well behind where they would have been had the pandemic not occurred (level 4 pre pandemic and now level 1 or 2). Those parents are unaware and should be worried.

We just do a lousy job explaining this to parents. Research studies showing that today’s x-graders are behind 2019’s x-graders by n% is just not the way to connect with parents who care about THEIR KID.

It’s straight forward to show the impact for kids with a 2019 score. States rarely do.
