Troll (2022)

This is an interesting kaiju film set in Norway. It has many flaws but can be worth a viewing. Sadly, I was getting annoyed by the frequency of estranged daughter/father relationships in film, this year.

Chompy and the Girls

If you like an odd flick, then this one might be for you. I liked the early setup and the eerie scenes where "Chompy" stares at the protagonist. Sadly, when you reach the second act, I felt the film falls apart.

Nosferatu (1922)
The original, the classic, and worthy of so much praise. If nothing else, watch this for the director's ability to create creepy atmosphere without sound. The scenes of Orlok's shadow interacting with the physical environment is inspiring!

Nosferatu (1979)
Whew! There is so many wrong things about this film. The director abused the rats, he filmed real corpses for his opening, and the titular character is played by human garbage. That said, Isabelle Adjani as Ellen is great, there are plenty of amazing sets and costumes, and more!

Nosferatu (2024)

I'm so glad this was made. Skarsgard was so cool as a Dacian noble, turned vampire. The shadowy magic was unique and fun. I also loved Willem Dafoe and how he went from Orlok in one movie to the "Dr. Helsing" in this one.

Heretic (2024)

I am so glad to see Hugh Grant in this philosophical/theological thriller. The dialogue is WAY more deep than it has any business to be. I was excited intellectually and viscerally. I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed staying up late and discussing philosophy.

Rabid (1976)

David Cronenberg knows how to make me squirm uncomfortably. He can keep me engrossed with interesting ideas and peculiar story-telling. While not my favorite, I have to tip my hat to this master of horror.

Dampyr (2022)

This Italian, action-horror is fine. I thought it was mindless fun. If I want a better version, I would rewatch Blade and Blade II.

Prowler (1981)

This early slasher was so exciting that I fell asleep.

Daughters of Darkness (1971)

I do not like most exploitation films and this one strikes me as a cheap attempt to excite viewers with the promise of lesbian vampires. Meh. Give me films like The Hunger if you want to go that route.

Speak No Evil

I recently saw the American remake of the Dutch film of the same name. The highlight of the remake is the incredible acting from James McAvoy. I think the original was more poignant, but you cannot deny how McAvoy owns this one!

Basket case

This campy movie is full of violent fun. The movie is a conjoined twin scenario. And in campy fashion, one twin is good while the other is horribly evil and deformed. The first twin keeps his brother in a wicker basket, hence the title.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is just another sequel for a movie that never needed it. I was not impressed with the plot. That said, I did like the cameos and there were a few nostalgic moments for me.

Brightburn

The less I say about this film, the better. This stinker is stealing the tired hook of Superman, but he is evil. This is an overused idea and the talented cast cannot polish this one.

The Void

The Void is a fun creature feature. It also has Lovecraftian elements with cults, ancient unknowable evils, and gross body horror moments. I loved it and this is the second time I watched this one. The budget is limited but the content is high!

Until Dawn
This film starts with a bang. It takes a very interesting spin on films like Friday the 13th. Sadly, I felt the resolution sputtered out. I would still check it out as there are certainly worse films for the spooky season.

October 9: Sputnik
Perhaps a change from American films will improve things? So I dipped my toe into a Russian film. The special effects were good but the story left me scratching my head.

Sinners
Sinners is worth the hype. I do recommend checking this one out. It has some interesting action sequences and a deeper message about our nation's racial divide. Also, Michael B. Jordan just knocks the proverbial ball out of the park as he plays two cousins.

October 8: Cabinet of Curiosities
With so many poor selections, I reached out and grabbed a gem I certainly recommend this anthology series from Guillermo Del Toro. Many of the episodes are inspired by H.P. Lovecraft stories like Pickman's Model and Dreams in the Witch House. Go see this series!

The Endless
This is the second time I watched this film. Two brothers return to a death cult. The longer the brothers stay, the more they discover an unseen and impossible to understand entity that bends space, time and their sanity. Yes, on paper, I should love this. So what went wrong?

October 7: Death of a Unicorn
This movie is schlocky nonsense with a ton of self awareness. You should probably skip it if you are looking for something good. Sadly the talented cast doesn't put enough shine on this silly story.

Night Teeth
Night Teeth is a fun vampire romp set in LA. I think it is worth a watch for some dumb, action fun. The movie reminds me of Vampire The Mascarade RPG. As if some players wanted to create a story based on their favorite campaign.

Oct 6: Beezel
Beezel is an interesting film that has a cool concept. I think the story is cool but the way it is divulged could use some work. The effects are very cheap but that doesn't push me away.

Antrum
This isn’t a found film per se… It is a fake documentary of a fake film that supposedly kills the viewer. I can safely say the rumor is just a marketing ploy. The film has a cheap, grindhouse aesthetic but is interesting. I wouldn't call it good, but it might be worth a watch.

October 5: The Twin

This film feels very personal and I wish it was better. I don't know if the author was going through some stuff. Sadly, if you want to watch a horror film about death and mourning then skip this one and aim for movies like The Babadook or Hereditary.
