Apparently the trend started when Pete Townshend accidentally broke a guitar on a low ceiling and was then forever expected by fans to keep destroying guitars.

A great album, but as a keen guitarist, I’ve never quite been able to accept the whole “guitar smashing” concept.
As young players, we struggle to buy our first guitar and work our way up to being able to afford better guitars. We cherish them.
