On this day in 1944 Lieutenant-General 'Boy' Browning, the commander of HQ Airborne Troops (it wasn't a corps yet!) circulated a paper on airborne operations in Brittany #DDay #DDay81 #WW2 #Brittany #Bretagne

Some of the most technical wartime documents have some of the most colourful artwork. This is the geology of the Normandy coastline. It was part of the planning for Operation Axehead #DDay #Arnhem #DDay81 #Arnhem81 #Axehead #Normandy

This map shows the defences around St Malo, and potential landing beaches. This map was produced during the planning for Op Beneficiary. The terrain in Brittany was ideal for the French Resistance and allied special forces #WW2 #SWW #Airborne #Brittany #Bretagne #StMalo #Airborne

One of the greatest things about working with Second World War History has been getting to meet so many veterans, many of them sadly no longer with us. In 2017 I went to Normandy with John Jenkins MBE, a Pompey legend #DDay81 #DDay #Pompey #Portsmouth

The National Archives. Hundreds of years of official records, and a treasure trove of Second World War History. There are hundreds of thousands of documents, many either never viewed before or never written about. I couldn't have written my books without them #Arnhem81 #WW2 #DDay81 #Airborne #TNA

I've been to Arnhem a few times, including in 2007 when me and my brother walked from the DZ at Ginkel Heath to Arnhem Bridge. It's a bloody long way. This is a rather youthful me at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. #Arnhem81 #WW2 #DDay81 #Airborne #arnhem

On this day 80 years ago in 1944 General Montgomery held the second of his briefings before D-Day, codenamed Thunderclap. This one was attended by HM King George VI and the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill #DDay #DDay81 #WW2 #SWW

Grandad served in the Home Guard before joining the Berkshire Regt and going to Palestine. After suffering from Malaria he joined the Paras. This photo shows him during Parachute Training - third from left - the aircraft is a Lockheed Hudson #Arnhem81 #WW2 #DDay81 #Airborne

So, why Second World War History? It all starts in 1944, 39 years before I was born. My Grandad, Private Henry Miller, fought at Arnhem in the 11th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment and was taken prisoner about a mile from the bridge. #WW2 #Airborne #DDay81 #Arnhem81

OTD in 1944 HQ Airborne Troops issued the Movement Order for 1st Airborne Div's planned ops after D-Day. Moving 10,000 men to airfields that had just been used for the D-Day drop was no simple task #DDay #WW2 #DDay80 #Airborne #Normandy #BritishArmy #OTD

Earlier today I went for a walk in my local Cemetery and found 5 Royal Marines CWGC burials. There are men from the First and Second World Wars, an RM Engineer, a Marine doing sea duty on a tanker and a 15 year old Band Boy. I'll share some stories soon #royalmarines #WW1 #WW2

Spotted what feels like a WW2 vehicle parking cutting just off New Barn Hill, N of Goodwood. US Army units were in the area prior to D-Day #Goodwood #WW2 #DDay

The road was lined with police, and the hearses were escorted by detachments from the armed and civilian services. The route was crowded with spectators.

I left Portsmouth City Council yesterday after almost 25 years. What started as a six month summer job at Southsea Castle lasted a lot longer than anyone would have imagined. I've been privileged to work with some amazing people on some incredible projects and events.

The damage may have been worse as the area was made up of poor quality housing that had been identified for slum clearance before the war. Speculation was rife for many years that an aircraft had crashed, but no aircraft debris was found #OTD #Portsmouth #Blitz

The blast broke windows up to a mile away. The crater was 60ft by 12ft. 18 people were killed, most of them in Conway Street itself, and 169 people were wounded. Nearly 500 people were made homeless and hundreds of private business premises damaged #OTD #Portsmouth #Blitz
