The Sexual Health Research Lab at Queen’s University is recruiting measurement development and/or trans and gender-diverse health experts to participate in a new online study.
The Sexual Health Research Lab at Queen’s University is recruiting measurement development and/or trans and gender-diverse health experts to participate in a new online study. The purpose of this study is to provide an expert review of a new inclusive and comprehensive measure of the healthcare experiences of gender diverse Canadians. Participants must identify as a measurement development and/or trans and gender-diverse health expert (academic and/or clinical) with a Ph.D., Psy.D., or M.D. degree, be 18 years of age or older, be able to read and write in English, and currently reside in Canada. Experts include those who self-identify as an expert in measurement development and/or trans and gender-diverse health and are affiliated with an institution (if academic) and/or registered with a governing body (if clinical). We are seeking individuals across a variety of fields (e.g., psychology/counselling, medical, education, physical therapy) and welcome participants of all gender/sex/ualities with an aim to have representation from participants with diverse social locations. If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you! Participants are invited to complete a brief 10-minute online demographic pre-screener survey. Those who are selected to participate in the expert review will be asked to complete an online survey evaluating the inclusiveness, comprehensibility, and understandability of a self-report measure that has undergone two rounds of interviews with a diverse group of community participants. The expert review will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Selected individuals who participate in the online self-interview survey will receive a $30 CAD gift-card of their choice as a thank you for your time. A QUALITATIVE STUDY INVESTIGATING THE ROLES OF CONSENT AND SAFETY IN POTENTIALLY CATHARTIC BDSM PRACTICE. This study seeks to amalgamate best practices and codes of conduct used by professional BDSM practitioners across Canada and the United States. Furthermore, these professionals will be asked about their opinions and perspectives on the therapeutic potentials of BDSM when these best practices are followed. This data will build on the growing empirical scholarship surrounding healing/cathartic potentials of BDSM, offering clarity for further research. Conclusions This scoping review highlights the adaptability and resourcefulness of older LGBTQ+ adults in using technology to maintain social connections, despite facing various challenges. These findings underscore the importance of community support and resilience in overcoming the barriers to digital engagement. The findings suggest that interventions aimed at reducing the digital divide and promoting inclusive, accessible technologies could further enhance the well-being and social health of older LGBTQ+ adults.

Resiliency Despite challenges, studies showed that older LGBTQ+ adults demonstrated significant resilience during the pandemic. Many adapted to new technologies to maintain social support, which helped them cope with the isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic. Past experiences with stigma, discrimination, and social isolation (e.g., during the HIV/AIDS crisis) made older LGBTQ+ people uniquely prepared to adapt to the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Challenges Older LGBTQ+ adults also faced several barriers to using technology, including poor internet access, outdated digital devices, and limited digital literacy. Some struggled with accessibility issues, such as inadequate captions on video calls, making communication difficult. This led to feelings of frustration with online spaces, with many older LGBTQ+ adults finding it less satisfying than in-person connections.

Benefits Findings from the included literature showed that digital technologies allowed older LGBTQ+ adults to expand their social support during the COVID-19 pandemic. LGBTQ+ people reported building and prioritizing their existing social networks, enhancing their digital capacities, and improving existing supports and accessibility to resources, which were now available online.

Study Purpose The purpose of this project is to examine how older LGBTQ+ adults develop and maintain friendships, relationships, and community and how these connections have been facilitated and/or challenged by online technologies and the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a scoping review to synthesize and analyze available literature about how older LGBTQ+ adults used online technologies to maintain social connections during the pandemic.

With the political tension surrounding transgender issues, it is important that we show our support and care as well as strive to make the changes needed to make the world safer for everyone regardless of gender or orientation.
