Fisher • August 05, 2025 with the text: Starting in 2020, the University of Colorado Health system (UCHealth), the state's largest nonprofit hospital system, began relying heavily on third-party debt collectors to engineer lawsuits against its own patients. Though UCHealth had consistently brought lawsuits against patients through 2019, UCHealth sharply decreased its own debt collection actions against its patients the following year. At the same time, total debt collection actions brought by CollectionCenter Inc (CCI), a collection agency owned by a revenue cycle management company, more than doubled. A sample of court records indicates that the majority of CCI's actions were brought on behalf of UCHealth.

Missing Strugglers: Debt's Reach, Bankruptcy's Limits, and a Proxy for Who's Left Out Forthcoming Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law 18 Pages Posted: 4 Aug 2025 Dalié Jiménez University of California, Irvine School of Law; Harvard Law School - Center on the Legal Profession Date Written: July 31, 2025 Abstract This essay uses Debt's Grip as a point of departure to examine how debt operates as a system of social control in the United States. While the book offers a vivid portrait of those who file for bankruptcy, it also gestures toward a broader reality: millions of financially distressed individuals who never access relief. Drawing on legal scholarship and political theory, this Essay argues that debt disciplines individuals, fragments solidarity, and undermines democratic agency. It proposes a new metric-the ratio of debt collection lawsuits to bankruptcy filings-as a proxy for unmet need, revealing a population of "missing strugglers" visible to creditors but excluded from legal protection. The analysis calls for reimagining legal and political responses to financial distress beyond the bankruptcy system. If Defendants opt to purge their contempt, they shall file by April 23, 2025, a declaration explaining the steps they have taken and will take to do so; and 2. If Defendants opt not to purge their contempt, they shall instead file by April 23, 2025, declaration(s) identifying the individual(s) who, with knowledge of the Court’s classwide Temporary Restraining Order, made the decision not to halt the transfer of class members out of U.S. custody on March 15 and 16, 2025

It's weird to have complaints about credit reporting companies in a debt collection category, they're not sending bills to customers. Even weirder that the top complaints against them is that they are attempting to collect debts.

This is a credit report story. The top 3 companies being complained about (Debt Collection/I don't know category) are the 3 CRAs which have a 5x increase in complaints in the ~1 yr after Jan '24 v. the 10 years before. My guess is that this is likely driven by credit repair organization complaints.

It does not appear to be "scam" companies that can't be contacted though, given the increasing response rate over time. [This is limited to the 'I do not know' category].

The goal is to break government so we think it can't do anything for us. To make us forget that while it's hard to govern well, it is possible. The other part of the website they erased, the $21 billion+ in financial relief the CFPB got back for 205 million+ people. Government can work.

This is the federal court temporary restraining order of Jan 31 which applies to (at the very least) the states that sued: NY, CA, RI, IL, NJ, among others). And yet today NIH announced a cap on indirects on EXISTING grants, many of which go to the states.
