The Great Debate of 1920 between Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis is something that holds not just fact for me, but also truth. Shapley (left) argued that our solar system is off to one side of the Milky Way Galaxy (correct) and that our galaxy is the entirety of the Universe (incorrect).

I've long thought that Ghost in the Shell was amazingly prescient in technology, social responses, and politics. Shirow predicted a USA broken in pieces after WWIII, with one part merging with the Soviet Union. What he got wrong is that he thought it wouldn't the American Empire part.

I love learning details about how processes work. Specifically, the things that are not naively intuitive. I like what is only obvious in hindsight.
For example, it wouldn't have occurred to me that in the field of construction, the installation of skylights exhibits periodic boundary conditions.

Those who know the home renovations here over the last 16 years know that each time a room is worked on, we discover something else that threatened the safety of the house or displays cheap Potemkin action by the previous owners. There was a section of the floor which was 1cm higher than the rest.
