This would be punishing to inclusive collaborations, if you rolled it out without warning. If you put your grad student on a proposal they made a plot for, they then couldn’t lead their own work as a postdoc. Doesn’t seem right.

Just a note that the (older) Mathematical Geneology project also collects astronomy and physics PhDs, and goes quite far back in time. Many astronomers are only a generation or two from a physicist and a few more from a mathematician. So, useful to explore and contribute to both.

They don’t get everything right, but I’ve always deeply respected that they don’t do any form of legacy admissions. A fellow alum’s child applied, and the parents quickly got a letter from admissions saying “please don’t contact us about your being an alumni because we don’t effing care”.
