Honestly, the heavy trope usage and references in a lot of recent sets have rubbed me the wrong way, and this is probably the most coherently I’ve been able to put it into words.
Something I’ve noticed, especially lately, is that a lot of top-down sets have had a majority of their space filled by references and tropes. I suspect it has something to do with the switch from three and two set blocks to the random vibes based blocks we’ve been getting, because looking back, we would get the same amount of tropes in Murders at Karlov Manor spread throughout an entire three set block, which gave the originality of the worlds shine through more. So, with that loss of guaranteed extra space to explore the tropes of a setting, it’s possible that the designers, whether consciously or unconsciously, have been putting more tropes into a single set, hoping to cover as much ground as possible in that trope space while they know they’ll be able to.
