Bemused by surprise expressed by commentariat at margins of REP losses last night, given @kalshiofficial.bsky.social prediction markets’ consistency for the last *year*, I explained @justinwolfers.bsky.social & Zitzewitz’ model www.nber.org/papers/w12200 in my Intro to Math Modeling class today.

8pm and they’ve called it for #Prop50!
November 5, 2025 at 4:04 AM
Ms17’s sketch of a diagram for a paper describing results of a project about spacetime geometry that she and another high school student have been doing with me.
November 3, 2025 at 11:24 PM
Almost finished off the Ramsey consumption/saving model in my Intro to Math Modeling class @ucsdphysci.bsky.social today. Funny that growth/decay rate of consumption is independent of income!
October 31, 2025 at 10:10 PM
Today in Intro to Math Modeling @ucsdphysci.bsky.social : Derivation of constant relative risk aversion utility, w/reminders about continuity, some elementary probability, and l’Hôpital’s rule.

@nbcsandiego.com, Researchers discover unpublished Dr. Seuss manuscript @ucsandiego.bsky.social's Geisel Library www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/r...
Will _Sing the 50 United States_ suffice to preserve the Union from the dissolution toward which our current polarization is heading?

My heart rate during Ms17’s XC race this afternoon. The race started at 3:45, and I managed to cheer her on at 11 spots on the course. That’s my workout for today!
October 30, 2025 at 1:04 AM
Ms17’s XC team running the Mission Bay course for their 2nd Coastal Cluster meet. Almost November … but San Diego!
October 30, 2025 at 12:54 AM
Today in Intro to Math Modeling @ucsdphysci.bsky.social: a Ramsey model for optimal consumption & saving, w/digressions on Ramsey theory and utility theory.
October 28, 2025 at 12:09 AM
Reading Frank Ramsey's "A mathematical theory of saving" as I prepare tomorrow's Intro to Math Modeling lecture @ucsdphysci.bsky.social. Apparently £5000 went a long way in 1928 -- Bliss!
October 27, 2025 at 6:00 AM
Today in Intro to Math Modeling @ucsdphysci.bsky.social : dynamics of naïve & activated T-cells & IL-2: ODEs, equilibria, stability, and successful immune response. With a digression on diaeresis and umlaut!
October 24, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Discussed Fibonacci groups in my first year seminar today. Showed the Cayley graph for F(0), the free group on two generators, and worked out that F(3) is the quaternion group.
October 23, 2025 at 10:31 PM
Back to math w/reminder of (signed) volume of simplex as determinant, to give elegant proof of Sperner’s Lemma due to @mclegume.bsky.social & Tourky, followed by Brouwer’s Fixed Point Theorem.
October 18, 2025 at 7:50 PM
Couldn't resist quoting Bertrand Russell on nuclear brinkmanship as the game of Chicken!. Some of the students knew who Russell was; none had any idea about "Mr. Dulles".
October 18, 2025 at 7:25 PM
Now prove the expected third* Nash equilibrium of Chicken! exists using the 1D fixed point theorem.

*Because SDMC students noticed previous examples all had odd numbers of equilibria.
October 18, 2025 at 7:13 PM
Next step: prove the Intermediate Value Theorem (which did not happen in Ms17’s AP calculus BC class) and a fixed point theorem in 1D as a corollary, and as warm-up for proving the existence of a Nash equilibrium.
October 18, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Started my San Diego Math Circle class by getting the students to think about some classic 2 person games.
October 18, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Jogging the course before Ms17’s Coastal Cluster XC meet at San Dieguito Park. Not a fast course … it’s all about uphill power and downhill recklessness!
October 16, 2025 at 10:47 PM
Helping Ms17 understand her teacher’s notes* as she’s studying for an Econ exam, I decided to explain it w/calculus. Suddenly she’s chortling, “This makes so much sense! I don’t have to memorize anything!”

*Yes, the middle plot in his notes is wrong.
October 15, 2025 at 6:26 AM
In my email this morning. Well done, @mit.edu.

Conclusion of Karl Menger-inspired analysis of USG #Shutdown2025 in my Intro to Math Modeling class @ucsdphysci.bsky.social, with pathways to reopening. Of course, if any actor’s preference statements are insincere …
October 9, 2025 at 6:36 PM
Most of what you say here is right, Arnold @schwarzenegger.bsky.social but your conclusion is wrong. You know this is a transparent, temporary, redistricting to try to control the Trump administration by overturning the REP majority in the House. Vote YES on #Prop50.
October 9, 2025 at 1:25 AM
Finished setting up a Karl Menger formulation of #Shutdown2025 in my Intro to Mathematical Modeling lecture @ucsdphysci.bsky.social today. Easy to see why parties are incompatible. Next … how impasse may be resolved.
October 7, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Before my lecture today @ucsandiego.bsky.social I noticed one of the students reading a book. Surprised and pleased, I asked him what he was reading … _Moby Dick_, and not for a class, just for fun! The kids are alright.
