COP30's key text, the global mutirão, just adopted here in Belém 🇧🇷
November 22, 2025 at 4:38 PM
Press conference room absolutely packed at #COP30 as 20+ ministers gather to call for a roadmap away from fossil fuels to be a key outcome of this summit

(Many more countries have expressed their support behind the scenes)

The loud and colourful display is a marked change from COP27, COP28 and COP29.

These were held in countries with restrictive laws on protests, forcing civil society to hold much smaller demonstrations inside the COP’s blue zone, which is technically UN soil.

PEOPLE’S PROTEST DAY🪧🇧🇷

For the first time since COP26, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of the COP host city, Belém, to call for climate justice and the protection of Indigenous rights.

Bom dia! I’m in Belém for the next two weeks for #COP30 representing @carbonbrief.org

Please come and say hello, keen to hear your thoughts on negotiations or about your research/specialty 🇧🇷🦜

NEW: Just 28% of nations have released plans for reversing nature loss a year after UN deadline

🐝8/17 megadiverse yet to produce their plans, called "NBSAPs"
🪲Includes Brazil, most biodiverse nation and COP30 host
🐜All G7 nations now have a plan, except for US

NEW:🌎Half of global emissions covered by 2035 climate pledges after UN summit in New York🌎

China, Russia, Turkey and 8 other nations announced new pledges at the UN climate summit

But two-thirds of countries are still to announce their new NDCs

Trump also claimed that "there’s tremendous oil that hasn’t been found in the North Sea"

This flies in the face of evidence showing both oil and gas production in the North Sea have already peaked and are in decline, regardless of UK climate policies

Today's @carbonbrief.org Daily Briefing factchecks the false climate claims in Donald Trump's tirade to the UN

Really interesting to hear thoughts from @mikaelaloach.bsky.social @zackpolanski.bsky.social @elpinchbeck.bsky.social on offering alternatives to rising climate denial and connecting with disillusioned people at the Guardian climate assembly

New factcheck: North Sea gas is not ‘four times cleaner’ than LNG imports

That stat only refers to extraction emissions. The lion's share of gas emissions come from burning it

See chart below and my factcheck with @drsimevans.carbonbrief.org for the details

What is the word to describe the feeling you get when you write about how young(ish) women who are regularly exposed to climate information are more likely to feel climate anxiety...

Really enjoyed speaking to researchers for this @carbonbrief.org explainer

Bizarre to be (incorrectly) referenced in the federal report supporting the EPA's proposal to revoke the scientific finding that underpins the government’s legal authority to combat climate change

Landmark ICJ advisory opinion still being delivered

We've just heard: "Fossil fuel production, consumption, the granting of FF exploration licences or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies may constitute an internationally wrongful act attributable to that state."

Hello, I’m in Kyoto for #COP3 for @carbonbrief.org, please feel free to say hi!

(At the Kyoto play in London last night, I’d massively recommend it!)

COP16 is closing! Colombian politician and COP president Susana Muhamad is getting a lengthy standing ovation for her work leading the talks
February 27, 2025 at 11:47 PM
The lightning speed has continued!

Parties just adopted the GBF monitoring framework AND the text on planning, monitoring, reporting, and review (PMRR), including the global review

Again no objections

Susana Muhamad says countries have given "arms, legs and muscles" to the GBF
February 27, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Countries have now adopted the financial mechanism text, after no further objections
February 27, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Countries have now turned to the separate financial mechanism text...

EU raising objections with paragraph 17 (below is what it currently looks like)

Parties have just adopted the text on resource mobilisation!

Cheers and claps in the plenary hall

#COP16 plenary (hoped to be the final) has started now in Rome

webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1t...
February 27, 2025 at 9:40 PM
Nations have finalised a document for planning, monitoring, reporting, and review (PMRR) in plenary at #COP16

There was just one outstanding issue – in classic COP fashion – with a footnote, which has been resolved

Formal adoption of documents won't happen until later tonight, final plenary at 9pm
February 27, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Representatives of the youth global biodiversity network are protesting at #COP16 in Rome

They say the “rushed” plenary sessions mean observers have not had a chance to contribute
February 27, 2025 at 8:47 AM
Countries have turned to the monitoring framework for the global biodiversity framework in afternoon plenary 🪲🪼

One of the only remaining brackets in the text is on the indicator to use for pesticide use

The UK has put forward a compromise that would allow countries to choose one of two indicators
