I personally found the book "Wir zeichnen den Menschen" by Gottfried Bammes really helpful for getting a grip on drawing humans. Especially the simple exercises with water colour he proposes early on. I'll attach two sample images of the exercises.

No, because what I was describing was a ban by Russia on all usage of the Ukrainian language, not just official documents, and importantly the persecution of people using it, and doing more besides.

Was that a good idea on Ukraine's part? No, I don't think so, it had problems, as you pointed out.

After all, the Nazi's also only did their genocide wherever they or their allies had control of, not the entire world, yet we rightly recognise it as a genocide.
July 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
Taken together with the clearly stated intentions of the Russian leaders to destroy Ukrainian culture in all its forms, I personally see it as pretty evident a cultural genocide is happening on the occupied territories.
July 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
They also took children from the occupied territories and brought them to Russia to be raised there (an act that the accepted UN Genocide Convention specifically calls out).

These are not just intentions, but concrete actions they take where they have control to destroy the very concept of Ukraine.

They have instituted a schooling system that is teaching Ukrainian children (again only in whatever places they have occupied) that Ukraine and Ukrainian culture never existed, and that they where, are, and always will be Russian.
July 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
They have forced the civilian population in occupied territories to take up Russian citizenship. They have destroyed books and other artefacts of Ukrainian culture that would set it apart from the Russian one.
July 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
The actions I speak of here are not related to the war and the toll it inevitably takes on all civilian populations. To be concrete: Russia has (on the territories it occupies) banned the use of the Ukrainian language and (informally) prosecuted people who did anyway.
July 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
This is why I don't think the idea of Russia committing (cultural) genocide as part of their war is as wrong as you make it out to be. It is certainly of a different kind than the Israeli one, however.
July 23, 2025 at 10:39 PM
It is technically incorrect to state that Rusisa is genociding the whole of Ukraine right now, but its leaders have made it very clear that if they had the means to do it, they absolutely would commit total cultural genocide.
July 23, 2025 at 10:39 PM
Russia is certainly engaging in cultural genocide in the territories it has occupied, and has made its intentions in that regard even more clear than Israel, where some politicians tried to muddy the waters.

Though not specifically defined in a convention, the concept of cultural genocide is widely accepted and used e.g. to describe the Chinese treatment of the Uyghur minority. Just personally, I also think this concept is useful and holds a fitting evocative name.
July 23, 2025 at 10:39 PM
People speaking of genocide in occupied Ukraine (if they have any sense) are using the concept of cultural genocide (which was in a draft of the Genocide Convention, but is not in the final document). It was to be defined as the purposeful destruction of a groups language, religion and/or culture.

I wouldn't quite call it immersive, but Limitless Path by DarkForsaken on RoyalRoad has a lesbian protagonist and is a system-apocalypse fantasy story. The romance isn't a focus, but once she finds her lover, its them adventuring together amongst the words so 🤷‍♀️

I totally agree. The amount of times I actually want to specify a specific sex/gender when talking about people is minimal. Most of the time I speak of shared human experiences besides the sex/gender binary. One of the things I appreciate about Japanese as a language is that it allows that.

I see. I suppose I missed the implication that the posts are all good faith. In that case I fully agree.
Giving your interlocutor the benefit of the doubt is good and necessary for creating fruitful discussions.

I agree with all except the last part, because sometimes you will see these scopings used in bad faith, to essentially pre-suppose an outcome. I think there is room to challenge such framings while engaging in good faith discussion, but admittedly few engage at this level of nuance on social media.

Concrete examples are investing bodily autonomy and epistemic authority in all individuals. Those are issues for all: Women (trans & cis), racial & ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, neuro-divergents, etc. Plain everybody not at the top of the pyramid benefits from those.
June 12, 2025 at 8:48 PM
Even more controversial statement: All marginalised groups have aligning core interests. Specifically changing the structures that see a chosen set of "highly-valued" males extract benefits from everyone else and demonise all that do not neatly fit into the extractive scheme.

Further, the US flag signifies the USA as a country. By changing how it is interpreted, you also influence how the entire country is seen. I think than imbuing the US flag with values incompatible with and opposing to fascism is just plain good.
June 9, 2025 at 9:45 AM
If a broad coalition against ICE and the spread of fascism can instead claim the flag as a symbol of Freedom, Liberty, and the Fight Against Tyranny it can become a powerful tool to support the movement.
