We switched to Primo this summer. I'm constantly annoyed/baffled by how much harder it is to find ANYTHING. And we do use the terminology "everything" but then also "beyond my library". Which is not clear at all! Why is "beyond my library" not included in "everything"?!

I worked at general reference at the HBLL and students were always so fearful about asking after those books. Radiating shame.

Oh, no, it's a religious "time is short". Like, you only have so much life to do this work because the end of the world/your death is coming sooner than you anticipate.

Two moments of culture shock shortly after moving to Ohio for me: Witnessing a couple fresh from a run each order and chug 16 oz of milk at the public market. And working white collar job as only man in department and all my women coworkers having regular, heated convos about college football.

Just like rolling this around here, but I think one real knot is that there's these handwavings about being an international church but a lot of it is really mapping US context on other parts of the world.

I don't have more than a gut sense of this, but one thing I do think is somewhat complicated here is the Church is still very much in the USA mold. So polygamy is not allowed in countries where it is legal. So are we talking if it were legal in the US? But then what about where it's still illegal?

I saw an ad for them yesterday with the tagline "Time is short. We are waiting" with an old timey pic. Is this...a plea? A threat? An excellent tagline for a horror film?

Why'd they come back to the US, you ask? They joined the Mormon Church and hightailed to Ohio to meet Joseph, but he'd already left by the time they arrived.

The family story is that they were Tories, which didn't quite make sense to me why it took them until the 1790s to exit, but after I found this I learned that Vermont wasn't a state until 1791, so perhaps that explain part of the timing?

Would have found it more useful it were like "oh, here's some better terms" or "perhaps you should try searching in XXX". But the summary of 5 seemingly random articles has dubious utility, I think.

Currently migrating to PRIMO. Our university (giant) is not turning it on immediately. I spoke up strongly against it because when I tried it out, it was pulling 5 articles with no context, explanation, or rationale of why those ones were "best" for the search.

Ah, yes, the notoriously consistent and clear "Christian views" which do not differ at all between, say, Westboro Baptist Church and the Episcopalians.

Do you think they were using, like, public record searches of properties based on a specific set of surnames? I can imagine this happening if they wanted to find refugees from a specific ethnic background outside of an enclave? Though that would only find homeowners...
