Our Recommendations:
❗Strengthen Enforcement of Platform Content Regulations during Elections.
❗Designate Islamophobic Networks as Dangerous Organisations and Individuals (DOIs).
❗Enhance Transparency in Hate Speech Moderations.
❗To the Government of India: Reservation under Article 19 (2)

Our findings show a clear pattern: Meta’s algorithms amplify hate, silence minorities, and enable exclusion. "Meta's platforms have consistently been an instrument for legitimizing the disenfranchisement of Muslim in India," said @ritumbra.bsky.social , Executive Director of DAHRD.

❗ The BJP’s official Facebook page shared posts portraying Muslims as “infiltrators” who should be removed from India.

❗ Meta’s sustained failure to enforce hate-speech policies continues even in India, its largest market with over 500M users.

What we observed:

❗Posts depicting Muslims as “rats,” “dogs,” and “infiltrators” remained online, despite violating Meta’s own Community Standards.

❗ Pages repeatedly reported for hate speech continued operating freely, spreading dehumanising propaganda targeting Muslims.

❗Over 4 months, we monitored 211 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) social media accounts and affiliated #Hindutva networks. What we found was alarming: a systematic spread of #anti-Muslim hate, much of it unchecked by #Meta.

On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, we call on governments everywhere to uphold this principle and protect the free press, a foundation of accountability and democratic truth.

📰 As Reporters Without Borders’ Director General Thibaut Bruttin stated, true press freedom means journalists can work without fear or constraint, be it political, legal, social or economic.

🌐This problem is not unique to India: the 2025 World Press Freedom Index found that more than half of the world’s citizens live in extremely dangerous places for press freedom, places where working as a journalist means risking life or liberty.

🔇 India remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media workers. According to the 2025 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, India ranks 151st globally, with two to three journalists killed every year because of their work.
