Today is 山開きの日 (yamabiraki no hi), the opening of the mountains for summer.

While some miniature Fuji (Fujidzuka) are climbable all year, some are restricted to special days like today. So I visited Ekoda Fuji just north of Ekoda Station for a quick hike before class! Today's topic? Traditions!

@hedahlbergdodd.bsky.social is extremely excellent and gifted me some of the celebratory merch marking anti-matter zine's brief digital run over the last two years. Norman Brannon's work on it was fantastic and deserves to be a collected book or something in its own right.

Yes! First time hearing the roving baked sweet potato trucks this year and I got a nice one. Didn't hear the dulcet "ya~ki-imo~" song once last autumn or winter and it was terrible

Swear I'm not an annoying marathon guy also, but I ran my first today - the Fuji International Marathon. 4:49, which should've been better - but the best marathon is a completed one. Now to finish the introduction to my diss and send it off to my advisor. Then that race is almost done too.

The fantastic IU-OSU Folklore and Ethnomusicology Graduate Student Conference will be held next year in Columbus, February 28 through March 1.

The conference is graduate student led, but all students (graduate and undergraduate) are encouraged to submit proposals!

Always a pleasure to visit the Toei Animation Museum, though I couldn't find all 7 dragon balls in their outer area

I wonder if @hedahlbergdodd.bsky.social and I are on the same train..?

"A punk rocker through and through, they do things like jump in Lake Kawaguchi or set fire to the forest with their intense live performances. They have grabbed the very hearts of their hardcore fans and refuse to let go."

I think I made the rain dragon mad - it really poured on me as I whistled "Singin' in the Rain"

One of the things I've really enjoyed about raising kids here in Tokyo is the gifts from the ward (special subdivisions of Eastern Tokyo prefecture), such as this "congratulations on being born!" sapling. We had a bunch of choices but went with a kinmokusei to keep our other olive tree company

Shakujii-koen was pretty much as full as I've ever seen it, so good thinking for sure.

(The bikes in this picture are overflow from the usual area into the walking path)

That sure is one view of "sekai" - two pieces of Tokyo skyline, the pyramids and Sphinx, big Ben and the Colloseum's ruins. That's it. That's the world.
