I don't know what it was about Lain, but I've never watched it all the way through. I've started it about 5 times since I first got it on VHS fansubs and something always derails my binge. Probably about time I try it again.

I still do Kickstarter (et al) for games. But I'm extremely picky about who runs them and I avoid anything where the main selling point is, "look at all the cool miniatures you get".
