I might be wrong, but Greenland is not the easiest to defend from a logistical perspective, if the US attacks it in earnest (unless Canada would be willing to wage a full out war, which would be catastrophic). More likely it'd be an economy war of escalating embargos, leading to mutual annihilation.

The bottom line is: don't mistreat cats, black or any others, or any other animals for that matter
Also wasn't rats, was fleas living on rats, that could arguably get brought home by a cat, so the plague story seems made up
