The leaf wasn't falling. It was caught on a single strand of spider silk. I have a photo from my Fuji that shows the silk, but this iPhone pic is a better composition. I'm amazed I caught this given how rapidly it was spinning in a relentless wind coming off the moors. I'd clambered to the top of the Dill Scout's Wood, late in the day, out of curiosity. The sun was about to sink over the horizon, and I had a way to go, but this was mesmerising. After a lengthy hike that took in Callis Wood, Edge End Moor, Stoodley Pike, Higher Moor, and Shaw Wood, I spotted a sign pointing to a footpath through another small wood. It seemed to head in the direction I was going, so I took the diversion, and clambered up a narrow, tricky path and found myself in the Jurassic era. The light was breathtaking, so I decided to snap a pic and ended up with a bonus lens flare. Seconds later, the Sun had moved just enough to vanquish the moment to history. I headed out for a walk through Hathershelf Scout Wood one late spring evening. After taking several diversions, I found myself headed up towards Blackwell Common but thought better of ploughing on as it began raining. You'd never guess from this picture, but the rain was horizontal when I spotted this young Roe deer in the middle of a buttercup-filled meadow. Heading up to Wadsworth Moor to get some snaps of the blooming heather, I encountered rush hour traffic on the path ahead! The sheep moved off the path and into the grass, then stopped and all turned to look at me. Well, all bar one. Or should that be all baa one?! Anyhow, this is a crap alt-text, but it shows a group of sheep standing in a green and purple landscape looking towards the camera.

A tangle of marsh grass, ferns, bramble and nettles obscure the path. Only it wasn't a path, it was a swamp. Despite the summer drought, this was so sodden that water went over the top of my boots, the ankle, not the toes! This was at the end of a really well maintained, paved path in Eaves Woods. It's another tangle of bramble, nettles and ferns and, despite being in shorts, I managed to get through this without being stung! These ferns were as tall as I am (almost 6ft) and are part of a clearly marked path in Hollin Hey Wood, Cragg Vale.

Work, work, work. No wonder I love escaping to quieter trails, like the path I found from my flat up to Wadsworth moor. A brutal climb, but what a view.

One more shot of the (fairly) new church, then the remains of the original church of St Thomas à Becket. They date back to 1256 (and I thought I was getting on).

It's glorious, gothic gloomth.

The porch of St Thomas the Apostle church, Heptonstall, with the bell tower to the left. I took this using a wide angle lens, so it appears to be leaning back, away from the lens. Like many Victorian churches, its architecture is Gothic. The ruins of St Thomas à Becket's church, Heptonstall. All that remains is a stone shell, including the tower. The west face fell away after a storm in 1847, but the church was used until the new one was completed in 1854. It still has plenty of gothic detail in the stonework. Just in front of it are gravestones, including that of 'King' David Hartley, one of the infamous Coiners. A shot taken inside the remains of St Thomas à Becket's church, Heptonstall. A row of Gothic arcades runs to the right with a row of columns to the left. In the foreground is what may have been the Chancel arch, framing the bell tower in the centre of the picture. The arcades that run split the remains of St Thomas à Becket church lead the eye to the church tower, and a wall that once house a stained glass window. Through one of the arcades, the new church and tower can be seen. Overhead, flat grey skies.

Handy! Pics from my walk up to the clouds yesterday fit #SundayPixOffTheBeatenTrack

Pottering round my flat in the morning, I could see clouds rolling in, shrouding the moors. I had to be there! So I headed up to Heptonstall in the afternoon for a gloriously Gothic walk. Alt-text for details. 1/2
The trail that leads around the top of Eaves Wood was blanketed in cloud. This was (or wasn't) the view towards Dill Scouts Wood on the opposite slope of the valley. In the bottom of the pic a few small houses in Mytholm can just about be seen. The trail goes along a rocky outcrop, which can be seen in the lower right corner. A few bare tree tops poke over the edge (there's a sheer drop around 80 metres on to the trees and rocks below). The trail leads the eye towards a telegraph pole. Everything else is hidden by cloud. The church of St Thomas the Apostle looms large. Shot using my phone's telephoto function, the church looks like it's leaning back, trying to get away from the bare branches encroaching from the left. In the lower part lies a jumble of gravestones. I wouldn't have been surprised to find the body of David Warner here, impaled by the bell tower's lightning conductor (a scene from 1970s horror movie, The Omen). Another shot of St Thomas the Apostle's church. One of the longitudinal walls leads the eye towards the western porch, with the bell tower looming overhead (slightly greyed-out due to the cloud). A cobbled path leads towards the porch.

According to OSMaps, I’ve just walked 39.45km at an average speed of 66.1km/hr!

It’s flattering but worryingly inaccurate.
A screenshot of OSMaps’ summary of my evening walk. It shows me walking in straight lines over the hills, moors, across farmland, through woods and over main roads. It’s very flattering but worryingly inaccurate! My actual route as shown on my Garmin. I followed the rail side trail through woodland to Brearley and back along the canal. Total distance: 3.86km.

A few for #SundayPixPictures with bonus cats.
Albert, a female cat that was born wild in Botswana, peeps her head over the top of her favourite shoe box. Behind her is a poster by Hapshash & the Coloured Coat, a collective of English artists who designed posters for late 60s psychedelic acts. The poster is advertising upcoming events at the UFO club that ran throughout 1967 and includes The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, and the Liverpool Love Festival. It's in maroon, yellow and metallic gold, and has strong art nouveau references, and some very trippy patterns. The legendary Ginger cat who is actually ginger coloured. I used to look after him while neighbours went away. Here he is on my bed in my Brixton flat. Behind him are prints for Nouvelle Vague, Cat Power & Mum @ the Barbican, another Hapshash poster for the UFO Club, and a Jamie Reid original that celebrated 50 years since the Sex Pistols' debut Never Mind the Bollocks. Four posters I had in my Brixton bedroom: Nouvelle Vague (ICA gig, around 2004), the UFO Club (screenprint with pink and orange on a metallic gold background), a limited edition screenprinted poster for Cat Power and Mum at the Barbican Centre, and a Jamie Reid signed original of the queen with a safety pin through her nose and 'God Save the Queen' handwritten around the edges.

The Rochdale canal is handy for #SundayPixMirror
Barges moored in the centre of Hebden Bridge are reflected in the mirror-still Rochdale Canal. In the background, there's a tall chimney above a former mill, with Common Bank Wood rising steeply in the distance. One of many bridges that span the Rochdale Canal. This one has some kind of corrugated lining which is reflected in the water, making a golden-ratio like shape. A cobbled path to the left leads through a bridge spanning the Rochdale Canal, West Yorkshire. It forms a keyhole-like shape that's reflected in the water. Through the tunnel, trees and blue skies can be seen, all reflected in the water.

Two pics for #SundayPixMirror taken on Lake Windermere one December. I can only find low-res copies of these.
Boats sit on Lake Windermere which is mirror-still. The masts are reflected in the water, and remind me of how sound waves are shown when editing audio. Mist rises from the lake, and there's an islet covered in trees in the background. An tree-covered islet in Lake Windermere. Mist is rising from the lake, and there are white yachts in the distance. It looks like I've removed colour apart from on the islet but that's not the case.

I watched del Toro's Frankenstein last night. Really enjoyed it, but couldn't shake the feeling that this Bowie era was an influence on how the creature was styled, especially with its long, flaring trench coat.

Light was fading fast as I returned due to all the stops I made to take 100s of pics of the tree canopy. Found a few interesting things on the ground, too, including the blue heron.
A view across the West Yorkshire moors, with Heptonstall Church in the mid-ground, and Stoodley Pike monument in the distance. Cloud bubbles over the horizon, and there's clear blue skies above. A riot of autumnal colours contrasts against blue sky and dark tree trunks and branches that resemble a cracked mirror. It's all fractal. It's mesmerising. Messing around with the iPhone's portrait mode. It creates a false depth of field that has its own character. Here, the camera is on the ground on a carpet of fallen leaves with focus in the middle of the picture. Moss-covered drystone walls bound the path. It looks like a soft landing, but this was treacherous walking due to all the loose rocks washed down by recent rains. The blue heron stands statue-still in the middle of a lively Hebden Beck. The water cascades down wide steps, delivering food to the heron that waits patiently for unsuspecting, helpless fish to be swept by.

Saturday morning's chores left me feeling grumpy, especially as cloud and rain arrived at lunch. Ambitions for a long hike were truly squished when I realised I'd missed items off my shopping delivery, and to go into Heb.

Took a 16km diversion for hummus and kitchen roll. 🤣

Rows of terraced houses peek out from woodland around Hebden Bridge. The trees are red, orange, yellow-green. Dazzling autumnal shades. Mashed potato clouds scud across blue skies. A carpet of red-brown leaves leads the eye up towards a white cottage visible at the end of the track. Trees tower either side, their canopies ablaze in yellow, red, orange and brilliant greens. Blue sky peeks through the canopy. Another red carpet of leaves, this time in the woods at Pecket Well Clough. It was late in the afternoon, and the sun illuminates everything in brilliant warm shades. Blue sky contrasts through the canopy. Moss-covered drystone walls mark the lane boundaries. The war memorial that stands above Higher Booth Wood just outside Hebden Bridge. It looks like a miniature Stoodley Pike, a memorial to the Crimean War that can be seen from here. Autumal trees are ablaze in colour in the background but the scene is dominated by a clear, deep blue sky.

#SundayPixStacks The Bridestones, on Bridestone moor, above Todmorden, West Yorkshire.

Billions of years of time, stacked, compressed and pushed from the sea floor to the moor tops.
An outcrop of granite rocks stands on the West Yorkshire moors. Grey, overcast skies. The 'bride' stands at the front (to the right), and it looks like she's holding the whole lot back from this angle. Strata can be seen running horizontally through all the rocks that have slowly split and been shaped by the elements over millennia. The bride stone. It reminds me of a mummified head thanks to the layers of strata that can be seen from wind and rain erosion. The elements have eroded the base, leaving a support for a large boulder that teetering on top. It's reminiscent of the kinds of rocks found in the Grand Canyon / US midwest desers. The bridestone, her groom and a bridesmaid/best man. Three rocks stand atop the West Yorkshire moors, silently sentinel over the town of Todmorden. Layers of stacked strata can be seen on all three, although processing the dark granite tones was tricky!

That said, I'm not sure how many people want to see hundreds of shots of tree canopy. In the meantime, here's a shot of Eaves Woods putting on a show.
Trees bask in late afternoon autumnal sun. Shades of red, yellow, orange, and light and dark greens. They take up four-fifths of the picture. Across the top is Heptonstall, with the church where Sylvia Plath is buried visible in the far right corner. A row of houses peeps over the tree line, and behind that are the open moors of West Yorkshire.

Saturday was the closest I’ve yet been to one of the area’s Roe deer. Encountered this on a narrow, high path above the busier main trail below. It also wanted to avoid people.
A tree on the left helps frame the image as it bends over the remains of a granite drystone wall. Just to the right, further up the trail, a young Roe deer stands. It was wondering if it should / could jump over the fence into a field of cows. It seemed uncertain as the narrow path didn’t allow for a run-up. It wandered up and down for a few moments. I blinked and it was gone.

I've walked through 15 different woods this weekend! Took around 1,200 pics. That's a lot of editing! Some shots from today's trails:
A shot of a clearing in one of the many woods above Broadhead Clough nature reserve, West Yorkshire. It's a riot of autumnal colour, with sunlight making the trees blaze with colour. There are patches of late-blossoming pale pink heather dotted around. The skies are blue with light cirrus clouds. A photo of the boardwalk that carries people over the swamps in Spa Wood, West Yorkshire. It cuts straight through the middle of the pic. Trees tower overhead and look like they're leaning in to whisper to each other. Ferns grow either side of the boardwalk. A wall that stands high above Cragg Brook, a river in Cragg Vale, West Yorkshire. The wall is covered in moss and lichen, and there are three huge steps that lead to an opening. They look pretty precarious, especially as the ground quickly falls away and leads to a steep plunge into the trees and river below. Sunlight peeks over the wall and lights up yellow-green leaves. Spotted this in Spa Wood, West Yorkshire. It's an oak leaf sitting on a fallen branch. Four round seed-like things with red and yellow mottling are sitting on it. It looks like serving suggestion created by an elf.

Managed to squeeze a woodland walk in yesterday, although it felt like an audition for a remake of Deliverance by the end. Recent storms, plus autumn’s carpet of acorns and dried leaves, made for some treacherous trails.

A rough, rock-strewn trail leads upwards into Bob Woods, West Yorkshire. There’s a small post at the foot of the pic indicating the path splits. Rocks are covered in moss and the trail is covered in red-brown fallen leaves. Sunlight catches the canopy highlighting brilliant yellow-green colours. Several mushrooms sprout from a tree trunk. I’ve no idea what kind they are. Some look fresh, one is drying. There’s a small lattice of spider silk across them. Patches of dark green moss are visible, too.
