A Welshie who likes rocks
Sometimes it takes a Celtic rainforest in the mountains to remind you that things are ok. And that when your mum tells you you need to leave the house she's right.
Tycanol woods and Carnedd Meibion Owen yesterday - with water and acorns falling from the sky! #pembrokeshire #preseli #sirbenfro

I went fossil hunting down Abereiddi today. As it's #fossilfriday here's the finds- plenty of tuning fork graptolites (didymograptus) which Abereiddi is famous for. And my first trilobite!! It may only be half of one and it may be just the trace but it's definitely made my day!

It's official - I'm doing a PhD at @durhamearthsci.bsky.social!! To celebrate here's the rock that started this 20 year obsession with all things geology. It may not be the prettiest but this little floating rock blew my tiny mind (and still does). Roll on October I can't wait!

A spontaneous trip to Tenby (a cardinal sin amongst locals in the summer - always far too busy) but an opportunity to look at more South Pembrokeshire rocks! Part of the Bishopton Mudstone Formation formed during the carboniferous period. This county's a geologist's heaven

Freshwater East to Manorbier! Unplanned, spectacular and makes me glad to be back home. Did it take us 3 times longer than it should have? Yes. Was this because we kept stopping to look at cool rocks, plants, insects and ruins? Yes. Did I take loads of photos of rocks? No comment

Heading back up north this morning, and what a way to end my visit home than a spontaneous Preselis trip!Imagine this scene with swooping skylarks, a light wind and the earthy smells of summer (and sprinkle in a discussion of hillforts and possible origins of Carnedd Meibion Owen for good measure)

This is my favourite dinosaur (no idea why, I've just had a toy one for longer than I can remember) and it's so cool to see how our ideas of what they were has changed over the last 200 years!
Iguanodon was named 200 years ago today, so here's (AFAIK) the first time it appeared in #paleoart: an 1833 watercolour/pencil study "Reptiles Restored, the Remains of Which Are To Be Found in a Fossil State in Tilgate Forest, Sussex" by George Scharf. That's Iguanodon on the left. #Sciart thread...

Pretty much 5 years to the day I'm back in Frosterley and the weather couldn't be more different! I never thought I'd be in the same place without cold weather gear! Brilliant to be back - even if the pub we all sheltered in doesn't seem to be a pub anymore.
