I interviewed Gerald Hirchfeld (Cinematographer for Young Frankenstein) for a documentary I produced >30 years ago. One of his major points was that Mel Brooks hired him because of the stark black and white look he (GH) achieved in Sydney Lumet's "Fail Safe".

Absolutely this.🔥I think one of the most liberating shifts in any craft is realizing the trappings of occulture aren’t rules to imitate, they’re lenses to refine and reveal your own power. Treat your practice as a living, breathing engine inside your actual life and let it become unmistakably yours.
