Not that pettiness is something to be entirely avoided, but in general taking it far is a serious character flaw and we should work to undermine anyone who shows much of it (even if they're otherwise a good and/or useful person).

There's good reason to be angry at the defectors. There's no clear line to point to Schumer on this. No evidence suggests he engineered it. Nobody reasonable expects he actually can stop such things (although he can and should punish them).

Many years ago Mohammad Mossadeqh (eventual PM of Iran before the Revolution) did his dissertation on this kind of thing (in Swiss French); might be relevant.

It's not like people have an oblligation to respond to everything. Sometimes we do. Sometimes we even respond to things we ordinarily wouldn't to see how the expression of a response-concept works out. Part of the way online forums work.

Like a lot of people, I argue with people here and elsewhere when it's interesting - if someone misbehaves enough, or if they're not actually making points, or if they're confused in a way that's going to take too long to critique, I might not respond. Or if I get busy with other things and forget.

You're using that term because you don't realise it makes no sense, and laying it on the most reasonable and healthy parts of the left because you don't get that extremism isn't a good way to go against extremism.
