The Statue of Liberty was based on a Middle Eastern woman. Bartholdi envisioned the statue as an Egyptian woman in Muslim clothing, w/ a torch called "Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia. Egypt rejected it so he redesigned the statue for the US’ centennial & renamed her "Liberty Enlightening the World"

I read the Earthseed series as a kid, Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. Octavia Butler is amazing. Written '98 Parable of the Talents reads almost like a foreshadowing of today, right down to the right-wing ideologue who runs for president with “talk of making America great again."
