Leo Sayer: “1992”
Released 2024
#RockSolidAlbumADay2025

Most recent ‘new’ album comes from recordings made about 30 years ago. Largely homemade demos which belie the fine quality of the songs. Highlights include Was I Blue, Wonderworld and On Stage.

Released 2002

This late career series of albums are all great but perhaps this is the best. When that rich baritone sings the title track be prepared to be judged as you’ll believe every.single.word.

Eurythmics: “Savage”
Released 1987

Gave this another listen to see if my opinion changed. It didn’t. Least impressive album by the artist IMO. Some tracks seem more like (good) ideas rather than fully complete songs. Thank god for I Need A Man.

Released 2017

The modern day confessional singer songwriter. He has a particular melancholy that permeates even his upbeat songs. Some very catchy and authentic pop tunes here. Loved by my son and wife equally.

Robert Plant: “Manic Nirvana”
Released 1990

Most songs here aren’t as polished as those on its predecessor. It takes time to hit its stride but finishes strong with Anniversary, Liars Dance and Watching You.

Simply Red: “Time”
Released 2023

I have to hand it to Mick Hucknall. He’s put out consistent albums of blue-eyed soul for the past 40 years. Just Like You from this is as good as anything they’ve put out in that time.

Released 2004

There are albums of covers by artists and then there is this incredible collection. Versions on this are sensational. It jumps out of the speakers and doesn’t let up for 27minutes. Wish it went for double that.

Hunters and Collectors: “Ghost Nation”
Released 1989

Pub rock with attitude and horns. Not always the most tuneful of bands but there are enough hooks to get you in. Best song? Ghost Nation itself.

Steve Winwood: “Arc Of A Diver”
Released 1980
#RockSolidAlbumADay2025

Only 7 songs long but he played all instruments himself. While You See A Chance is the highlight by far. This was enough to get him started on the road to greater success in the mid to late 80s.

Released 1993

Attempt by Noiseworks’ frontman at a solo career. Unfortunately, the songs aren’t as good IMO. Some funky tinges that might be why INXS let him sing for them for a while. Best track? All I Need Is You.

Martin Plaza: “Andy’s Chest”
Released 1994

Second solo effort by Mentals guitarist. Why he’d want to release an album of ordinary Lou Reed covers though is beyond me. Stick with his excellent debut, Plaza Suite, instead.

Released 2007

Can’t say I’m a massive fan of his band but this album has some potential. Works best when he isn’t trying to sound like Pearl Jam. Long Nights and the gorgeous Society are the standout tracks.

A local boy done good story. The first of 3 albums he’s had that went to No. 1 in Oz. There is an almost mesmerising drone to this album, driven by his voice. Best track is still So Beautiful.
