Combine that with bankruptcy "reform" in 2005 that prevents student loans from being dischargeable in bankruptcy. So, with all of that debt dragging down what should be an emergent middle class, we're left with college no longer perceived as a social good.

Student loan debt didn't really take off until after the 2008 crash (www.newyorkfed.org/microeconomi..., second chart, and www.newyorkfed.org/medialibrary... for history back to 1999) when a lot of in-state tuition support was withdrawn from higher ed during the crash that never really returned.

Trump could sign an executive order declaring Prima Nocta, and the GOP would be lining up offering up their daughters. Meanwhile, the Dem leadership would declare it a distraction from kitchen table issues. Yes, I'm voting Dem next election but JFC get out of the consultant bubble and do something.
