So many renting households don't have the financial resources to cope with an emergency. Here, you can see that 25% of renting households have less than $200 on hand, and 42% have less than $1k.

People in the poorest households endure the most violence.

People in households with less than $20k in income endured 1.2 MILLION violent victimizations in 2022.

A typical household in that income bracket had just $174 on hand.

Across age and income, too, renters experience far more violence than people in owner occupied housing.

The effect persists across so many categories. Here, you can see that tenants experience higher rates of violent victimization across racial and ethnic groups.

Renters experience serious violence at 3x the rate of people in owner-occupied housing.
