The EUBURN-SILEX campaign has just ended after a dozen flights over 🇫🇷 fires and 🇨🇦 plumes transported over the 🇫🇷 country. A comprehensive database was acquired using a set of innovative ✈️ in-situ and remote sensing instruments. Next phase is the postprocessing of the database acquired.

Picture taken over Southern France on July 26, 2025 from the research aircraft during the SILEX field campaign.
Researchers outfitted the aircraft with instruments to measure fire intensity and spread, meteorological conditions, and smoke plume properties.

#EUBURN had the opportunity to make detailed measurements of these long range transported 🇨🇦 smoke plumes from 17 to 19 july. We are studying how canadian wildfires 🔥 affect weather, climate and air quality across Europe. Plumes well observed 👀 from the research aircraft.

This week, the #EUBURN mission flew ✈️ directly above #wildfires 🔥 and through their atmospheric #smoke plumes 🌬 in southern France, getting rare observations at their characteristics. Here's what the wildfire near Martigues, northwest of Marseille, looks like from the research aircraft.

In France, #wildfires destroyed over 18600 hectares from the start of the year, compared to a 2006-2024 average of 6800 hectares for the same period, according to #EFFIS. While the exact origin of these fires is often difficult to determine, #drought and strong winds cause the spreading quickly.

UK wildfires push records in first four months of 2025 according to #GWIS. It already released around 525 KT of CO2 in the atmosphere as derived from #CAMS global fire assimilation system.

The new #EFFIS #Copernicus report is published. Wildfires burned around 148000 ha of protected areas in the EU in 2024, including areas that are part of Natura 2000, the network of protected areas covering Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
