Yes, he was. He was awarded a Bronze Star and two Oak Leaf Clusters because, as a chaplain, he often stayed behind with the dying soldiers in the field to transcribe their final words so he could send them to their loved ones at home. We found that out after he was gone; he never talked about it.

As a child I found a box of letters my dad had written home as his unit marched across Europe with the liberation forces. Horrified by accounts of concentration camps, I went to him crying and he soothed me by saying “don’t you worry baby - the world rose up to resist and remove that evil for ever.”
