they tell me i am remarkably well-adjusted, all things considered. that i have done quite well, quite quickly. i suppose that's a fair assessment. i still find myself incapable of envisioning a future, let alone one i would ever want. after enough substance abuse i can confess to a decade of isolation. i move on quickly, let the implications sink in over time. i will not force you to see. instead i translate my history into a familiar story: it's just The Usual Semi-Rural Millennial Trans Girl Opening Arc. abuse, abandonment, monstering, cast-away, cast-down, all set upon a stage of permaviolence. i reveal my triumphs--there's more than a few--it functions as a counterweight, lightens the blow. it is a fraction of the truth: deception via omitted nightmare; i downplay the horror, lest my unapproachability cross an unworkable threshold. it is hard enough getting my sisters to accept help as it is. eventually, i share specifics--fragments, puzzle-pieces, formative icons of a broken self--i don't connect the dots. all the shattered & damned know better than to let you see the damage unfiltered. you are unprepared. we can't go back. it cannot be undone. forgive me--i must actively disjoint the spear through my soul to persist--to allow it to recoalesce would annihilate me. besides, we cannot abide a savior. nobody's coming. it's my perverted mantra, an ancient prediction, an inverse prayer. it helps, cauterizes the wound, forces me to move. loneliness can be impetus too. i crave so deeply to be wrong. once, i reached across the world for sorority. now i have been disconnected so long that i have forgotten how to connect. i faded away to nothing & not all of me came back. bloody-winged devil with a dead girl in her head. a chorus of none. i have already been killed in the ways that matter. i am still, here. i am Still Here. it's not enough. i want the terror to never find me again. i want to be alive.
