Now that the dust is beginning to settle around Local Body elections, the next step for CAN is to figure out how many pro-cycling candidates were elected around the motu!

We know that many people care about cycling, and safe, comfortable, separated, connected cycling infra - let's push for it!

A reminder from our friends @bikeauckland.bsky.social Grab your vote and drop it off at your local council, library or supermarket.

Your vote powers the pedals for safe separated connected cycling infrastructure everywhere!

Here at CAN, we know that every car trip replaced by bicycle brings benefits to our budget, and to our sense of well-being - it’s all part of the #CyclingMagic. If you experience that Cycling Magic, how about encouraging your work mates? It’s the last week to pop your vote back in the voting box!

That #CyclingMagic - jump on the bike, head to the game, and you're warmed up! And it's a great way for kids to head to the soccer, or rugby, or swimming!

With about 7,500 sports clubs across the motu, there's lots of opportunities to #CycleToTheGame !

CAN supports the Department of Conservation's advice to Always Be Naturing! We do that every time we cycle out - to school, shops, coffee with friends!

There will be millions of experiences by cyclists who experience nature - the harbour, the hill, the trees, wind.

Keep Naturing!

Daylight saving tomorrow, and weather is getting warmer! Thoughts turn to summer - several months away yet, and those cycle paths look inviting! Our friends at Hauraki Rail Trail have you sorted!

From all of us at CAN, have a great weekend cycling around!

Grabbing a water bottle, she unlocked the bike, and set off down the drive. The clouds scudded across the sky, the wind was fresh, and she noticed the new spring growth. She breathed deeply, and there it was again - that old cycling magic; it never failed to arrive.

Whoops, bit late to the party!

September 19th marks Womens' Suffrage Day in Aotearoa NZ, and the humble bicycle played a big part in achieving the right of women to vote in 1893. The rest is history, and the humble bicycle still powers revolutions.

Great weekend in Nga Motu / New Plymouth as the CAN Board visited @NorthTaranakiCyclingAdvocates - the Board inspected the new separated cycle infrastructure on SH3/Devon St West, and had a good korero with members from NTCA.

Pro-tip; you haven't lived til you've cycled the Coastal Walkway.

Chris Bruntlett from Dutch Cycling Embassy notes several factors critical to countering Bikelash. For example; "Build a Broad and Diverse Coalition: By sparking a values-based conversation about our societal aspirations, we can find consensus ..."

At CAN, lower speeds in our local communities is not negotiable. We recognise the benefits it brings to all road users, including cyclists. Safe, connected, separated cycling infrastructure includes lower speeds.

Vote for candidates who supports lower speeds on your local streets.

It's part of that #CyclingMagic - on your bike you can pop down to a local cafe, to the bookstore, the gym because you can. You don't have to worry about finding a car park, or the traffic, or the sheer stress of driving - all those evaporate when you jump on your bike.

Biking is a fun and easy way to get more exercise in your life. You’ll feel & look better when you regularly jump on your bike to go to work, to the shops, to the beach, and at CAN we stand behind that promise!

Pssst!! Wanna know what's a really good budget buster? That makes you smile, & you go for ages on a bowl of muesli?

When you vote for candidates who believe in the power of bicycles, you help make possible all the nice things that make our communities ... affordable!

As Ruth from Spokes Dunedin pointed out earlier this year, good bicycle parking at supermarkets makes all the difference! As many people noted, there is variability in the standard of bike parking at supermarkets; 1/n

One of the side benefits of jumping on your bicycle - apart from smiles on your face, the feeling of freedom, smelling the sea breeze, and enjoying the sun - is exercise. You don't think about it really. You have somewhere to go, so it's natural to jump on the bike and go! But ...1/n

There has been sadness at the release of the final Coroner's report into Fyfa Dawson's tragic death as a result of bad behaviour by Downer and McConnell Dowell in Christchurch in 2019.

There has been a long process, but at the end of the day CAN is satisfied with what has happened as a result...

Sometimes you need to Mix your Go, as Auckland Transport says - drive to the park’n’ride and take the bus; take the train to a station, then switch to bus, or walk to the ferry terminal. But when you pick your bicycle? That’s FREEDOM.

Part of the cycling magic is seeing friends and locals while cycling around, and slamming on the brakes while calling out Kia ora! Hello! for a good 10 minute natter.

Wouldn't it be nice to have greater chances of that happening?
