I think Brother Ali’s phrase “Land of the thief, home of the slave…” rings more true.

On a whim one year, I went to a local sheepdog trials on a beautiful Saturday. It was such a blast I came back the next day. And every year since.

But wait! Jan 6th was “a day of love” (said Trump). So which is it?

Seveneves is actually one of my favorite books from him.

ohmygosh I loved Old Man’s War so much. So much that I made my dad read it, and he won’t touch sci-fi with a 10ft cattle prod. He, like Mikey, liked it.

You are one of my very favorite authors. Absolutely love your books.

It’s super cool that you write books, especially for that age group.

“I bicycled to the library.”
“I walked to the library.”
“I went to the library.”

“Went” makes the method of going irrelevant, as the point is I’m at library. So we’re using “read” like “went” now for lack of alternatives?
November 24, 2024 at 1:35 PM
So let’s say I have extended the word “bicycling” to also include “walking”, for whatever reason. And I walked to the grocery store but I say, “I bicycled to the grocery store.” And someone said, “You didn’t REALLY bicycle.” they’re being ableist? I still got to the store.

Fascinating.

No. Those are the meanings of the root words. But point taken that meanings change over time.

Why is losing the distinction so important now?

Is there some shame around listening to Audiobooks of which I’m unaware?

It’s not ableist in the least to draw a distinction between two different activities.

It would be ableist to say that one not capable of doing one or the other is somehow inferior, and I’m not saying that at all. I have, in fact, said that saying one is better than the other is absurd.

Is it because I used the word “possible”? I don’t understand what you mean by my imagining what it might say.

1. Talladega Nights
2. Elf
3. Lego Movie

Honorable mention: Spirited

Not a great analogy. Possible definitions in the dictionary for “see” are “to be aware of” or “to come to know”, neither having anything to do with sight.

I don’t understand why caring about a common understanding of what words should mean is snobbery or phony.

To resort to the written equivalent on a tantrum, your argument stands on shaky ground indeed.

Rather than play make believe that “read” and “listen” are the same things, ask what is behind the obsession with hierarchy. To say one is better than the other is absurd when all they are is different.

Exactly.

Reading isn’t the only way to consume a book. Listening to someone read it to you is another way. I don’t see the advantage in pretending they’re the same thing just because they achieve similar results.
