No trains running today so just a casual 50km back from Manchester to Pendle. Only took 2h30 which I thought was quite good.

Thank god for eBikes!

Was nice to see this pleasant cycling Junction in Bury as a respite from the other 50km of car centric roads I rode along today.

My first time using the Deansgate lane. Bloody brilliant.

This used to be a 4 lane traffic sewer.

Some photos of the Accessible Nelson scheme going in. Look how much wider the footways are going to be, and the new cycle tracks are taking shape!

Not to mention elsewhere which is black tarmac with random green/orange chippings. How do they expect Electricity North West to have that on the back of a van ready to go? It looked amazing in 2016, not so much now...

Try this orange! You can see some utility company tried and failed!

This is what got me looking at the masterplan. Did you know they're about to start a highways scheme on this road that KEEPS and repaints that awful door zone cycle lane?

I don't know if there's time to change it but I've just emailed eastlancsluf@lancashire.gov.uk urging them to do so.

This long term masterplan for a gyratory in Burnley seems to take a leaf out of TfL's book to me: closing off one side of a gyratory to cars and making the rest of it two way is textbook TfL.

Its OK, I didn't want to use the footway anyway...

There's even an ABSOLUTELY PERFECT example of a Sparrow Crossing coming. I knew they'd catch on up here eventually.

I hope the cycle lanes will be better demarked than in the artists impression but the render versus the old layout is night and day.

Pleased to see some good progress on the construction of the improved footways and cycle tracks through Nelson, Lancs. I wouldn't say the designs are fully LTN1/20 compliant with lots of locations where the cycle tracks become shared footways, but it'll be the first decent onroad route in E.Lancs.

Where there's space, Wythenshawe shows a nice example of making the crossing safe for cycling.

I'll accept that this is a classic @apiln.bsky.social though :)

Linkedin mentioned a job in the "Greater Burnley Area" recently. Knowing this is nonsense, I googled it and quickly got some AI slop asserting it's real.

Looked into it some more and the only non-AI generated result was a reddit joke from two years ago.

Reddit memes given as fact now.

A great ride today around Pendle and Burnley. Really can be a lovely part of the world.

Got a telling off from these geese though.

A stopped up highway and a modal filter in Lancashire. Do they really intend to take these out?
May 21, 2025 at 8:29 AM
It's bike lanes and public realm, not bus lanes, afaik.

On track to be a record #Solar Generation day for us today with essentially no cloud cover and relatively cool temperatures keeping efficiency up.

Should easily sail past 32kWh generated by sunset: this is about 4x the needs of the house.

6.8kWp array on east/west aspects.

Perhaps there's an interim (relatively) low cost solution to at least have a token link there? Boyer St -> old Chester Road carriageway -> upgrade existing crossings over Chester Road -> eastern Trafford Road Bridge -> existing CYCLOPS?
May 13, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Lanes 1 and 2 at the bottom (faintly) says "Trafford Park". But if you follow the markings, only lane 1 goes off to the two Trafford Park lanes: lane 2 goes off to Salford. So you'll have people weaving dangerously there.

Extremely chuffed to get my first sub-30 minute 5k this weekend! My first parkrun was back in October when I completed it in 42 minutes walk-running (emphasis on the walk part).

It's been such a rewarding hobby - despite frequently hating it while actually doing it :D

There's some horrendous ones here. They're all inset into the side road so disabled users have to make four 90 degree turns just to cross each road. Then they are barely flush, have no tactile paving for VI users, and many of them cross cobbles, and often have cars over them.

Infuriatingly the same scheme in Burnley gets it right and oh so very wrong on two different junctions. Really the latter junction should have just been straight crossings and eaten the reduced capacity: I'd like to see them get a cycle design vehicle over that toucan...
