They passed the courtyard on the way to the castle, where hoards of servants hurried to finish setting up before the guests arrived. Rivers of blue ribbons and flowers covered every conceivable surface. Twinkling lights and gems suspended in midair above the tiled dance floor. Blue glittering silks hung from every balcony and window in the castle. Being the youngest of her siblings, Ellery was not born when the last coming-of-age ceremony was celebrated at Castle Starlight. She wondered if it was always this beautiful or if her parents went the extra mile for their last child. Ellery heard many stories of the great deeds both of her brothers accomplished, but they never spoke of the party that preceded their journeys. She thought of Tabassum, the eldest. The only one of the Isra-Musa family to never complete her rite. The only one willingly discrowned. She wouldn’t be there for her ceremony tonight. She wasn’t in Twilight Valley at all. She may not even be in Artemisia’s territory. Her missions were always kept on a need-to-know basis, and Ellery never needed to know. Ellery looked up at Desdemona’s smiling face. The crownguard reminded her so much of her sister, if Tabassum ever smiled. She flicked at her bracer to get her attention.
