MechWarrior Online was aiming for a more Eve like economy where mechs were degraded in battle, but they implemented it piecemeal and poorly so it felt more like just a tax and a push to pay for premium

Early souls likes, tho not failures by any means I feel failed to meet the ambitious multiplayer goals they had of meaningful death and cooperation by the systems being so obscured.

Theres a few games that have tried to shake up fail state incentives. pvp is such a rich space for this sort of exploration but so often fails in one way or another.
