Ultra wide-angle lenses have been around forever, at least since the early 20th century so this could have been the approach.

The more I think on this I'm convinced they just edited out the camera from the picture, and took a self portrait in a garden sphere. they chose a complicated background! They could have taken the photo on a fish-eye lens and comped it into the sphere but the hands out/in are too perfect.
